12. Mega River Severn in baking heat and unable to stop


So I’ve now left Gloucester, we went
through the actual dock, and then through the lock. It was a bit quicker emptying
then it was filling I must say. Absolutely brilliant day to cruise, and
we’re back on to the River Severn, heading north. I’m going to attempt to go up to
Upton-upon-Severn. It’s quite a way, it’s around about 6, 6 and 1/2 hours of travelling, but
I’ve got Molly bed, I’ve got water, I’ve got my lunch,
so fingers crossed It should be alright! Once you leave the east channel of the
river, you pass Upper Parting. It’s where the bulk of the river’s water flows,
bypassing the Gloucester lock and dock, and you definitely feel the current
change. If heading downstream towards Gloucester, this is the point your advised
to call ahead to the Gloucester lock. It’s actually quite nice navigating
rivers and possibly difficult, journeys with other people, especially people that
know what they’re doing, like Carolyn and Andy. They’ve
been on this river before, they’ve experienced it, they know what to look
out for. At this time of year the river is tidal up to Upper Lode Lock. But once
the gates open, the current was calmer and there was less floating debris. The river is the greatest in terms of
water flow in England and Wales, and is around 220 miles in length. Starting in
the Cambrian mountains in Mid Wales, it then flows through the counties of
Shropshire, Worcestershire and Gloucestershire, where I started today. I
joined the River Severn here in episode 6, after travelling down the neighbouring
River Avon. We’re now on the non-tidal part of
the River Severn, lovely day, nice and calm, just north of Tewkesbury, and I’m
going to moor up at Upton-upon-Severn tonight, before our even longer journey
tomorrow. Well I wasn’t expecting that when going through King John’s bridge, but
with a river so large, it comes with large vessels! This is what I’m finding when traveling
on rivers, you just mustn’t have any strict deadlines. I just went through Upton-upon-Severn expecting to moor up, and unfortunately there’s no mooring spots
available. So, I’ve had to keep going, and the next mooring spot is Worcester, which
is a good three, three and a half hours away. I’ve got loads of fuel,
I’ve got lots of water on deck, because I can’t stop anywhere, so I’ve just got to keep on
going. Lavish and grand cruises moor up to the south of Worcester, and it’s been a
very long, tiring and hot day. The bridge arches spanning across the river, are a
welcome sight, as it means we’ve finally reached Worcester. Next time I discuss
the poorly installed spray foam lining that came with the boat, and how I’ve

  5. Hi Jono, another good vlog. It's nice to see my old cruising ground from other people's perspective. If you're brave enough there's usually mooring available in Upton Marina but beware the very expensive plastics moored in their. If your heading straight to Stourport from Worcester I would suggest mooring at the pub at Astley Burf just before Lincomb lock, the moorings their are good and quite numerous. There are very few visitor moorings at Stourport and they are usually taken which means locking into the basin and up onto the Staffs and Worcs. There is only one visitor mooring in the basin which is next to the elsan point. Happy cruising.

  11. Looking forward to more detail vids about your fitting out process. Btw, tip for you… get a copy of Colin Edmondson's little book 'Going it alone'. It's packed with loads of suggestions of how to make life easier when you have a crew of one. I use his technique for going up narrow locks all the time. Much safer and quicker!

  16. If you can't more somewhere you want to, ask someone there if you can more along side them. Most people will let you. (or at least they would when I was canalling a few years ago).

  17. Hello Jono, I enjoyed watching your vlog, you're making a nice job of it.
    If you're on a river like this with no moorings, and you really would like a break for a cuppa, or maybe an urgent need, you can always drop and anchor on a wider and prefeably straight section of the river, leaving plenty of room for sandbarges to come by.
    Have some more good fun on your boat with the lovely Molly, she makes me think of the last dog I used to have.

  19. Before the days of mobile phones. We were advised to moor up and let the lock keeper at Gloucester Docks that we wanted to come in BUT he never said WHY ! So as a novice. I ignored the advice as inefficient and I chugged up to the gates and sounded my horn only to be swept past them heading towards the wear. I put the boat into reverse but the current was far to strong. Luckily the hire boat company had fitted the boat with a large anchor which I threw over board it gripped the river bed and swung us around so I was facing the other way. The engine in forward gear slowly pulled us away from the wear and we were able to moor up. A valuable lesson but I do blame the Lock Keeper for not telling us why we should moor up.   20. There used to be a communal pontoon for Upton Upon Severn. I'm amazed there is no public mooring. They must be missing a lot of boating business.

  24. Do you have access to a "hot knife"? It works great on that spray insulation. It heats up the knife just enough to melt thru the foam leaving a clean finish behind

  27. Are you not allowed to anchor on the opposite side of the canals, out of the main channel? Maybe you could go over the "rules of the road"…(I have not watched all of your videos yet, so excuse me if you have already covered this…) Really enjoy your travels and love the country side, it is really beautiful.   30. Why not just stop and tie up to a tree overnight, as long as you don’t overtly trespass and move on come the morning then what is the harm.

  32. hi, can i ask a few questions . im moving to Evesham area soon , and im torn between a power boat and a cruiser. power would be a day out, and the cruiser more a full day / weekend .

    what does it cost you in litres to travel 6 plus hours, on your canal boat

  33. On rivers, so called wild mooring is always an option. A long as you don't need to go ashore. Keep an eye out on the banks for a nice, strong overhanging tree or one that's fallen in, approach slowly from downstream and hook up the bow line. Some of my more memorable moorings on the non-tidal Thames have been ad hoc.
