Alternative Ways to Make a Dental Dam

Hi! I’m Sammy from Health Education and Promotion, and today I will be showing you alternative ways to make a dental dam. A dental dam can be used to prevent the transmission of STIs during oral sex with a vagina or oral sex with an anus However, dental dams are not always readily available so today I will be showing you 3 ways to make a dental dam if you do not have one on hand If you’re interested in learning about how to use a dental dam, check out other video about how to use a dental dam Before making and using a dental dam, it is important to first establish consent and communication between partners You want to make sure that both you and your partner have given consent and are enthusiastically willing participants for the sexual act about to happen It is important that both you and your partner are on the same page and have talked about your likes, dislikes, and boundaries You can make a dental dam from a non-powdered latex glove First, cut off the four fingers but leave the thumb This can be a little difficult to cut, so you may want your partner’s help Then, cut down the pinky side and you have your dental dam You can use your fingers in the thumb for manual stimulation but the thumb cannot be used with a penis or dildo for penetration Also, even though you have the thumb you still want to write an irreversible letter in the corner when using the dental dam This is because the thumb can be flipped inside out and it may be difficult to know which side is for which partner Making a dental dam from an external condom is a great alternative for people who are allergic to latex because you can use a latex free condom to make the dental dam External condoms are also often more readily available so you can still make a dental dam even if you only have access to external condoms To make an external condom into a dental dam, you first want to check the packaging just as you would when using an external condom First, think about how the condom was stored You want to make sure it was stored in a cool place without much friction because lots of heat and friction can cause the condom to degrade so if the condom has been store in a wallet or on a car dashboard for an extended period of time, you should get a new condom to use Next, you want to check the expiration date Lastly, you want to check for the air bubble When you push down on the packaging, you should be able to feel the air pushing back and the package will sort of sound like a full bag of chips This ensures that the packaging and condom are intact and haven’t been punctured in any way Any easy acronym for checking the packaging is SEA S for storage E for expiration date and A for air bubble Now that we have checked the SEA, we are ready for smooth sailing and can open the condom To open, push the condom over to the side and carefully open the package, being careful not to rip the condom To make the dental dam, first cut off the tip This can be a little tricky, so it can be a great partner activity and then after cutting off the tip, you will have just a ring of the condom roll Then, cut down one side of the ring and then just unroll the condom and you have your dental dam Lastly, you can use non-porous saran wrap to make a dental dam Some studies have shown that the pores in porous saran wrap are not big enough for STIs to pass through However, we recommend that you use non-porous saran just to be as safe as possible To make a dental dam, simply cut a rectangle of non-porous saran wrap and you have your dental dam The dental dam is not reusable, so after use, throw it away in the trash If the dental dam breaks, and you are concerned about STI transmission you can call the Advice Nurse, who is available 24/7 If you are interested in learning more about STI testing, you can alsovisit the Student Health and Counseling Services website This has been a demonstration of alternative ways to make a dental dam If you are interested in learning about how to use a dental dam, check out our other video about how to use a dental dam If you have any questions or want to pick up safer sex products, you can visit the Love Lab located in the Health Education and Promotion office during office hours and in the ARC Lobby on Thursday nights.
