Antony and The Johnsons – River Of Sorrow (with Closed Caption Lyrics)

There is a black river It passes by my window And late at night All dolled up like Christ I walk the water Between the piers Singing
Oh, river of sorrow River of time River of sorrow Don’t swallow this time For we all know
the baby has expired Long ago she was pulled
from the mire And no precious liar
or well-wisher Can return the love
that was stolen So oh, river of sorrow River of time River of sorrow Don’t swallow this time Can you see the light At the end of the dark passageway? Take me with you towards the light Into the darkness
passing over the faces in the river Hear me, I’m whispering in your ear Oh, river of sorrow Oh, river of time River of sorrow Don’t swallow this time Oh, river of sorrow Oh, river of time River of sorrow Don’t swallow this time

  1. I am so glad you uploaded this…I've been looking for it everywhere!

  2. I seen the same episode of bones a while ago and had to look up this song. His voice is amazing

  3. Thank you so much for posting something relevant and not just something about a television show.

  4. That "moron" is Antony himself directing the band because the music was recorded live with the main vocal done later as an overdub. It gives the track an intimacy as it feels like you're in the room with the band as they play the song.

  5. This song is about Marsha P Johnson – which is also what "the Johnsons" represents in Antony and the Johnsons. Marsha was one of the first transgender woman and also the mother of Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (S.T.A.R) her body was found floating in the Hudson River after the 1992 Pride March and the police ruled it a suicide, but everyone who knew her knew she wasn't suicide and that's what this song is about.

  6. thank you Penelope, for giving this beautiful song a back round.  This made me well up and this is so profoundly beautiful .

  7. I bought this when it first came out  looking for weird and strange music

  8. Heard this while watching show "Bones." I love the sound of this song … currently listening to it as I study for tomorrow's exam. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful ….

  9. Debbie's in WY so I'm home with Antony Hegarty's music blasting. When I'm away it's all country music.

  10. Thinking about the Orlando shooting. I've heard this song was written about Marsha P Johnson – an early LGBTQ icon who stood up at the Stonewall Riots for the rights of gay people to be free. In June of 1992 her body was pulled from the Hudson River in NYC – following a recent Pride appearance. Police ruled her death a suicide, but her closest friends claim she had complained about being recently harassed near the river and believe she was murdered because she was a non-gender conforming LGBTQ person. RIP

  11. Bones, the end of season 4 episode 7- always swim with a buddy. A beautiful mix of song, sadness and humor.

  12. I had no idea about the history of this song, I loved it since I first heard it – so much emotion. But now it also gained meaning. 'Can you see the light, at the end of the dark passageway. Take me with you toward this light into the darkness passing over the faces in the river. Hear me! I'm whispering in your ear.' Thank you Antony and solidarity with your struggle!

  13. a hymn to my ancestor and beloved. rest in peace saint Marsha. I love you and I believe in your vision. I vow to protect all trans people. I vow to fight against str8ness and capitalism. I vow to honor your life and legacy. saint Marsha of Christopher street you are not forgotten.

  14. Is there anyone here who's actually a fan of Antony and The Johnsons and not some stupid drama series?

  15. i owe marsha p johnson my life, without her everything would be so different. rest in peace

  16. found this song while researching Marsha P. Johnson, ive never felt such sadness in my life before

  17. Bones brought me here!! First time I've ever heard of these. Where have you been for this long ??

Grandes.

  19. When I was 20 and a social outcast, cleaning toilets in Oxford.. I Hung out with a female Greek AI student from MIT and the gay son of a Greek general.. and we saw Anthony at a theatre in Oxford I think. They had a girl who did a scissor dance (she looked like Edward scissorhands) during the breaks and this and Anthonys music.. I swear it was perfect. An amazing show. With the exception of the Shaolin monks and some Tuvan throatsingers.. nothing was able to beat this do far.

  20. My God….the beauty of this song….of her voice….of these words….and of the pain while listening.

  21. There is a black river
