Ask Amy: Answering your insurance claim questions after Harvey

HOMEOWNERS HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT WHAT THOSE ADJUSTORS ARE TELLING YOU SO OUR CONSUMER EXPERT AMY DAVIS HAS BEEN LOOKING INTO SOME OF THE CLAIMS AND SHE’S HERE WITH ANSWERS.>>WE KNOW THAT FEWER THAN 250,000 PEOPLE IN HARRIS COUNTY HAVE FLOOD INSURANCE, AND YOU WOULD THINK THAT THEY WOULD BE IN THE BEST POSITION RIGHT NOW TO HAVE THEIR LOSSES COVERED, BUT ONE WOMAN UP IN LAKEWOOD FOREST OFF 249 CALLED ME BECAUSE THE ADJUSTOR HER INSURANCE COMPANY SENT TO HER HOME TOLD HER A FEW THINGS THAT DIDN’T SOUND RIGHT. PER HOME GOT ABOUT EIGHT TO 10 INCHES OF WATER INSIDE FROM HARVEY. SHE HAS FLOOD INSURANCE ON HER PERSONAL PROPERTY AND THE DWELLING, BUT THE OUT-OF-STATE ADJUSTOR HER INSURANCE COMPANY SENT TO HER HOME TOLD HER THAT HER APPLIANCES ARE NOT COVERED UNDER FLOOD INSURANCE, THAT IT WON’T REPLACE HER CERAMIC NICK TILE OR OTHER ITEMS LIKE COOK WARE THAT WERE COVERED IN SEWER/WATER. A FEMA REPRESENTATIVE AND A LOCAL INSURANCE AGENT TOLD ME THIS IS NOT ACCURATE AND THESE ITEMS ARE, IN FACT, COVERED BY FLOOD INSURANCE. IN GENERAL, A FLOOD INSURANCE POLICY ON YOUR DWELLING COVERS THE BUILDING AND ITS FOUNDATION, THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM AND PLUMBING, CENTRAL A.C. EQUIPMENT, FURNACES AND WATER HEATERS, REFRIGERATORS, COOKING STOVES AND BUILT-IN APPLIANCES, CARPET ENOVER AN UNFINISHED FLOOR, WOOD PANELING, BOOKCASES AND CABINETS, WIND BLINDS AND DEBRIS REMOVAL. OTHER PROPERTY WOULD BE COVERED UNDER HER FLOOD INSURANCE PERSONAL PROPERTY POLICY. IF THE INSURANCE ADJUSTOR TELLS YOU THAT ANY OF THESE THINGS ARE NOT COVERED BY FLOOD INSURANCE THAT WE JUST MENTIONED, GET THAT IN WRITING AND TAKE IT BACK TO YOUR INSURANCE AGENT TO FURTHER INVESTIGATE. IF YOU’RE STILL NOT SATISFIED WITH THE ANSWERS YOU’RE GETTING FROM THE ADJUSTOR OR YOUR AGENT, YOU CAN FILE AN APPEAL WITH FEMA. WE’VE POSTED INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO DO THAT. ONE THING THAT THIS VIEWER HAD MENTIONED THAT IS ACCURATE THAT HER ADJUSTOR TOLD HER, IF YOUR BOTTOM KITCHEN CABINETS, SHE HAD EIGHT TO 10 INCHES, BUT NOT YOUR UPPER CABINETS, YOUR FLOOD INSURANCE WILL PAY TO REPLACE THE BOTTOM, BUT THEY’RE NOT NECESSARILY GOING TO MATCH.>>TIME TO GET NEW DOORS ON THOSE CABINETS THEN.>>YEAH, OR SOMETHING. SHE’S BEEN IN HER HOUSE A LONG TIME, AND SHE’S LIKE, WELL, IT’S NOT EXACTLY MAKING IT LIKE IT WAS.>>AND THAT’S THE THING, YOU SHOULD BE MADE WHOLE, OR AT LEAST THAT’S WHAT YOU’RE MEANT TO BELIEVE.>>THAT’S THE IDEA.>>A LOT OF WORK THAT WE HAVE TO DO ON OUR OWN WHAT WAS AS CONSUMERS.>>UP NEXT, HONORING THE MEMORY OF A HOUSTON HERO.
