Bountiful residents prepare for potential flooding after wildfire

COMES TO THE FIRES AND THE STORMS WE’RE SEEING IN THE NORTH DROPPING HEAVY TO MODERATE RAIN. THANK YOU SO MUCH. A WEEK AFTER FLAMES DESTROYED 321 ACRES OF LAND, HOMEOWNERS LIVING NEARBY ARE PREPARING FOR POTENTIAL FLOODING. WE’RE TALKING ABOUT FIRES AND WE’RE TALKING ABOUT FLOODING, OF COURSE, THIS IS DUE TO THE BURN DAMAGE ON THE SLOPES ABOVE THE HOMES. IT WAS CAUSED BY THE GUN RANGE FIRE DUE TO AN ABANDONED CAMPFIRE BACK ON AUGUST 30. AS THE CITY AND RESIDENTS PREPARE FOR RAIN, THEY PREPARE FOR ANY DAMAGE IT COULD CAUSE, ESPECIALLY THOSE LIVING NEAR A CREEK. HAVING LIVED HERE A WHILE AND WITNESSING WHAT HAPPENS IN THIS CREEK, I’M A LITTLE BIT NERVOUS ABOUT THE DEBRIS FLOW COMING OFF OF THE HILL. WE’RE WORKING WITH THE FOREST SERVICE TO ASSESS THE HILLSIDE TO STUDY WHAT THE LOSS OF VEGETATION IS, WHAT THE SOIL ABSORPTION IS TO DETERMINE HOW BIG THE RISK IS FOR POTENTIAL MUDSLIDES AND FLOODING AS WE HEAD INTO THE RAINIER SEASON AND THE FALL. THE CITY OF BOUNTIFUL IS ENCOURAGING RESIDENTS TO GET FLOOD INSURANCE. THE NEXT TWO TO THREE YEARS IS CRITICAL PERIOD AS THE SCORCHED LAND RECOVERS WHEN SIGNIFICANT RAINFALL COULD MAKE IT VULNERABLE TO FLASH FLOODING AND DEBRIS FLOW.
