Cleanup begins in Southside Hampton Roads after Dorian

(DEANNA) WE CONTINUE OUR COVERAGE OF THE AFTERMATH OF HURRICANE DORIAN THIS MORNING. VIRGINIA BEACH SAW ITS FAIR SHARE OF POUNDING RAIN, WIND, AND SURF FROM SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE, THERE ARE STILL THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE WITHOUT POWER THIS MORNING. 10 ON YOUR SIDE’S MARIELENA BALOURIS JOINS US LIVE AT THE OCEANFRONT WITH AN UPDATE ON CONDITIONS THERE. GOOD MORNING LENA. (MARIELENA) GOOD MORNING – A MUCH DIFFERENT SCENE HERE TODAY THAN WHAT WE SAW YESTERDAY. IT’S NOT RAINING, THE WIND HAS REALLY CALMED DOWN, AND THE WAVES AREN’T CRASHING LIKE THEY WERE YESTERDAY. ON ATLANTIC AVENUE – WE SAW SOME BRANCHES DOWN, THINGS LIKE THAT. HERE ALONG THE BOARDWALK, YOU CAN SEE THE MESH THAT WAS BLOWN OFF OF THE RAILING IN THE STORM. TAKE A LOOK AT WHAT IT DID LOOK LIKE YESTERDAY. DORIAN BROUGHT HEAVY WINDS, A LOT OF RAIN AND SOME MASSIVE WAVES TO THE VIRGINIA BEACH OCEANFRONT. IT ALSO BROUGHT WIDESPREAD POWER OUTAGES RESORT CITY WERE WITHOUT POWER. SOME OF THOSE WERE HERE AT THE OCEANFRONT – MANY WERE IN AREAS LIKE PUNGO AND SANDBRIDGE. THIS MORNING – THAT POWER OUTAGE NUMBER IS CLOSER TO 4 THOUSAND PEOPLE. DOMINION CREWS ARE WORKING HARD TO GET THAT DOWN TO ZERO. WE KNOW A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE GOING TO HAVE TO CLEAN UP TODAY. IF YOU HAVE SANDBAGS – HERE’S WHAT TO DO WITH THEM. IF YOU HAVE DRY/UNUSED SANDBAGS: DO: REUSE FOR FLOOD PREVENTION. DO: USE IN FLOWER GARDENS DO: THROW AWAY EMPTY BAGS IN A TRASH CAN DO NOT: USE IN SANDBOXES DO NOT: DISPOSE ON SCHOOL YARDS DO NOT: DISPOSE ON BEACHES IF YOU HAVE A USED SANDBAG (IT HAS COME INTO CONTACT WITH FLOODWATERS): DO NOT: DISPOSE IN TRASH CANS (MARIELENA) AGAIN – WE KNOW DOMINION CREWS ARE WORKING TO FULLY RESTORE POWER. AND PEOPLE WILL BE CLEANING UP. IF YOU DO COME TO THE OCEANFRONT – YOU MAY SEE THAT CLEAN UP WORK CONTINUE. BUT THANKFULLY – NO MAJOR DAMAGE TO DEAL WITH. IN VIRGINIA BEACH, I’M MARIELENA BALOURIS 10 ON YOUR SIDE. (DEANNA) NOW TO A BIG WARNING FROM THE CITY OF VIRGINIA BEACH– DO NOT GO OUT AND PLAY IN THE FLOOD WATERS FROM DORIAN. STORMWATER RUNOFF MAY CONTAIN FECAL MATERIAL-ASSOCIATED BACTERIA AND VIRUSES. OFFICIALS SAY DO NOT ALLOW CHILDREN OR PETS TO PLAY IN IT OR THEY COULD GET VERY SICK. IF YOU HAVE TO GO OUTSIDE, THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT RECOMMENDS WEARING RUBBER BOOTS AND WATERPROOF GLOVES. (DEANNA) NOT EVERYONE LISTENED WHEN TOLD TO TAKE SHELTER DURING DORIAN YESTERDAY AFTERNOON. BEACH POLICE HANDED OUT TICKETS TO SOME PEOPLE BREAKING THE RULES AT THE OCEANFRONT. THAT’S BECAUSE THEY WERE DRIVING THEIR CARS ONTO THE BOARDWALK AND PARKING NEXT TO THE BEACH. POLICE WARN THIS IS NOT ONLY ILLEGAL — BUT IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. (DEANNA) HURRICANE DORIAN BROUGHT FLOODING ACROSS THE MERMAID CITY. THE USUAL SPOTS IN NORFOLK SAW SIGNIFICANT ISSUES YESTERDAY. OCEAN VIEW FOUND ITSELF UNDERWATER FOR HOURS BEFORE AND AFTER HIGH TIDE. THIS IS VIDEO FROM 19TH BAY STREET, OFF EAST OCEAN VIEW AVENUE. THEN ALONG THE HAGUE IN GHENT, SOME PEOPLE WERE CANOING IN THE STREET. THE GOOD NEWS — THE WATER IS RECEDING. (DEANNA) SPEAKING OF CANOEING– THESE PEOPLE ALSO USED A CANOE TO FLOAT DOWN THE STREETS IN THE COLONIAL PLACE NEIGHBORHOOD IN NORFOLK! WAVY-TV 10 VIEWER LINDSAY RHODES SENT US THIS VIDEO OF A GROUP OF EXPLORERS
