Deadly Jig Dragging Tactics for Rainy River WALLEYE- Jason Mitchell Outdoors

(INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC)>>WE’RE ON THE RAINY RIVER, LONG LINES. AND THERE’S A REASON THAT SO MANY PEOPLE ARE FISHING UP HERE. THIS COULD BE INCREDIBLE. UHH, THIS IS A GOOD FISH. BOY, THEY DO NOT LIKE COMING UP OFF THAT BOTTOM, DO THEY?>>NO, THEY DON’T.>>YEAH, BUT LOOK AT THAT RIGHT THERE! NOW THAT IS A TANK OF A WALLEYE. AND LOOK AT HOW, LOOK AT HOW SHORT THAT DORSAL FIN IS. THERE’S NO MAKING THAT FISH LOOK SMALL, HUH.>>NO, THERE’S NOT >>AWESOME FISH, MAN.>>WELL, WE’RE ON THE RAINY RIVER, LONG LINES, AND THERE’S A REASON THAT SO MANY PEOPLE ARE FISHING UP HERE. THIS COULD BE INCREDIBLE, YOU KNOW, BUT THE CHALLENGE IS MUDDY WATER, TRIBUTARIES DUMPING WATER AND THAT’S DIRTY, AND JUST TRYING TO FIND THAT CLEAN WATER. OR WE’RE JUST MOVING UP AND DOWN THIS RIVER HERE JUST TRYING TO FIND THAT RIGHT WATER COLOR. (INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC)>>YOU KNOW WHAT WE’VE GOT GOING HERE IS THESE BIG FISH ARE COMING IN FROM LAKE OF THE WOODS AND THEY’RE COMING IN TO DO THEIR DEAL. THEY’RE COMING IN TO SPAWN. SO, PEOPLE TALK ABOUT WATER TEMPERATURE ALL THE TIME. WHAT I FOUND IN YEARS PAST IS THAT 40 TO 41, 42 DEGREE WATER TEMPERATURE REALLY HAS THE BULK OF THE BIG FISH IN THE SYSTEM AND REALLY CLOSE TO DOING THEIR DEAL. SO, WHAT WE’VE GOT GOING RIGHT NOW IS WE JUST HAVE A LITTLE BIT DIRTIER WATER. SO, WE’RE HAVING TO USE BRIGHT BAITS AND SLOW THINGS DOWN, BUT IT DOESN’T CHANGE THE FACT THAT THERE’S A LOT OF BIG FISH IN THE SYSTEM.>>ONE OF THE CHALLENGING THINGS ABOUT FISHING A RIVER IN THE YEAR IS DIRTY WATER. YOU GET THESE TRIBUTARIES THAT OPEN UP AND THE WATER CAN GET REALLY MUDDY. AND WHAT WE’RE DOING TO COMBAT THAT IS WE’RE TRYING TO FIND AREAS WHERE YOU CAN GET A LITTLE BIT OF VISIBILITY, AND THERE’S AREAS WHERE YOU CAN’T SEE DOWN THREE, FOUR INCHES. AND KIND OF THE OLD RULE OF THUMB WITH RIVERS IS THAT YOU WANT TO BE ABLE TO SEE YOUR PROP, AND THAT’S IDEAL CONDITIONS WHERE TYPICALLY IF YOU CAN SEE YOUR PROP YOU’RE GOING TO CATCH FISH. WHAT WE’RE DOING HERE TO COMBAT THESE FISH – THERE’S A GOOD FISH – IS WE’RE SLOW DRAGGING THESE BIG PLASTIC TAILS. THIS IS A GOOD ONE HERE, CHRIS.>>GOOD FISH?>>YEP. I’M GONNA TURN THE BOAT HERE.>>THIS IS A DANDY HERE. COME ON UP HERE. BOY, THEY DO NOT LIKE COMING UP OFF THAT BOTTOM, DO THEY?>>NO, THEY DON’T.>>BETWEEN THE…>>NO, THEY DON’T.>>BETWEEN THE CURRENT, YOU KNOW, THEY JUST HAVE THAT EXTRA HORSEPOWER FROM FIGHTING THAT CURRENT ALL THE TIME.>>I LIKE WHEN THEY DO THAT LITTLE CIRCLE, YOU KNOW.>>OH, YEAH.>>THEY MAKE THAT BIG “S” CURVE YOU KNOW IT’S A GOOD FISH.>>YEAH. COME ON UP.>>OH, BEAUTIFUL FISH, MAN.>>OH, WOW, CHRIS! OH HO HO, WHAT A, WHAT A WAY TO START, HUH?>>NICE!>>YEAH, JUST PUT HER RIGHT IN THE WATER SO SHE DOESN’T GET BEAT UP.>>OH, BOY! THAT IS HUGE!>>THAT IS A PIG THERE.>>THAT IS A BEAUTY. (LAUGHS)>>LIKE — DID YOU SEE THE SIZE OF THE HEAD COMING UP?>>SO, THAT’S THE THING. THIS WATER IS SO – YOU CAN SEE HOW MUDDY THE WATER IS. YOU DON’T KNOW EXACTLY HOW BIG THEY ARE UNTIL THEY’RE ABOUT IN THE NET.>>OH! MY GOODNESS, SUCH AN OUTRAGE.>>OH, WOW.>>OH, OH, MAN.>>THAT IS A WALLEYE!>>HOLY SMOKES!>>WHAT A WAY TO START THE DAY. YOU KNOW, THIS IS A ONE IN A LIFETIME FISH FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE, BUT I TELL YOU WHAT, ON THE RAINY RIVER THIS IS WHERE PEOPLE COME TO CATCH BIG FISH. THAT’S WHY SO MANY PEOPLE ARE OUT HERE. THIS RIGHT HERE…>>LOOK AT THAT.>>LOOK AT THAT BELLY.>>OH MY GOODNESS.>>ALL RIGHT. AWESOME FISH, AWESOME. LOOK, LOOK AT HOW SHORT THAT DORSAL FIN IS. JUST A BRUISER OF A WALLEYE. WE’LL GET THIS FISH IN THE WATER HERE RIGHT AWAY.>>AWESOME.>>AWESOME, AWESOME. WAVED US GOODBYE EVEN.>>YEAH.>>WOW. THEY’RE SO BIG YOU GET SLIME ON YOU.>>NICE FISH.>>NO, I’LL SHOW YOU WHAT WE’RE DOING. WE’RE JUST SLOW DRAGGING THESE SIZMIC SHADS. FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE THAT LOOKS LIKE A BIG, BIG BAIT TO USE IN THE SPRING. THAT LOOKS LIKE A BIG HOOK, A BIG JIG, BUT WE’RE BASICALLY JUST DRAGGING THESE BEHIND THE BOAT. YOU CAN ALMOST IMAGINE JUST KIND OF SLOW TROLL. WE’RE JUST USING THE AUTOPILOT DRAGGING THESE UPSTREAM ABOUT POINT THREE MILES AN HOUR. THAT’S JUST A BIG EASY TARGET FOR THESE FISH TO FIND WHEN THIS VISIBILITY IS COMPROMISED. (INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC)>>YOU CAN’T REALLY TELL WITH THE WIND BLOWING UP CURRENT HERE, BUT WE’RE BASICALLY JUST CRAWLING UPSTREAM. THERE’S A LOT OF DIFFERENT WAYS TO FISH A RIVER. THERE’S PEOPLE THAT SLIP DOWNSTREAM. THERE’S NO RIGHT OR WRONG. BUT BASICALLY, WHEN YOU REALLY NEED TO SLOW THINGS DOWN AND MAKE THESE PRESENTATIONS AN EASY TARGET FOR THESE FISH TO HIT DRAGGING UPSTREAM REAL SLOWLY CAN BE A REALLY GOOD TACTIC AND A LOT TIMES WE’RE JUST CRAWLING ALONG THOUGH WE’RE GETTING IN A LITTLE BIT FASTER WATER. WE’RE BASICALLY HARDLY EVEN MOVING UPSTREAM, WE’RE BASICALLY JUST HOLDING IN PLACE AND YOU TYPICALLY, WHEN YOU HAVE THAT TYPE OF CURRENT THAT CURRENT IS ALSO STRONG ENOUGH TO MOVE THAT PADDLE TAIL, AND THAT PADDLE TAIL IS CRUCIAL BECAUSE THAT PUTS OFF A LOT OF THUMP AND MAKES THESE BAITS EASIER FOR THESE FISH TO FIND. YEAH, RIGHT HERE. SEE HOW IT KIND OF COMES UP RIGHT HERE?>>OKAY. YEAH.>>THERE’S ONE.>>ALL RIGHT. I’LL GET THE NET.>>OH, I’LL TELL YOU WHAT. WHEN THEY COME IN THAT CURRENT EVERYTHING FEELS BIG, BUT THIS THING ABSOLUTELY SLAMMED THIS BAIT.>>ALL RIGHT. I’LL JUST SLOW US DOWN HERE A LITTLE BIT.>>WHAT’S SO GREAT IN THIS CURRENT – 20 INCH FISH FEELS LIKE A 30-INCH FISH. (LAUGHS) (INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC)>>HE’S A PRETTY GOOD FISH. YOU CAN’T REALLY TELL UNTIL THEY GET CLOSE TO THE BOAT AND ALSO THEY DOG DOWN.>>OH, YEAH. THIS FISH LOOKS LIKE A GOOD FISH.>>I THINK HE’S, HE’S A GOOD SOLID FISH THOUGH. OH, YEAH! OH, YEAH! HA!>>THAT LOOKS LIKE A NICE WALLEYE.>>THAT WAS A PRETTY NICE SHADOW THERE.>>YEAH, THAT’S A RESPECTABLE WALLEYE. THERE WE GO! (INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC)>>NOT A BAD LITTLE FISH. HE WANTED, WANTED THAT BAIT. YOU KNOW, WHEN THEY CHOKE THEM DOWN LIKE THAT THEY’RE ACTUALLY FEEDING. YOU CAN TELL THE FISH ARE FEEDING WHEN YOU’VE GOT THAT BAIT CHOKED WAY DOWN IN THEIR MOUTH LIKE THAT.>>WELL, THAT’S THE RIGHT COLOR, RIGHT SPEED. SO THAT’S, THAT’S THE BIGGEST BATTLE IN FISHING THIS TYPE OF WATER WHERE YOU KNOW VISIBILITY IS COMPROMISED.>>AND THAT FISH IN PARTICULAR, I JUST DROPPED THAT, THAT ROD BACK JUST A LITTLE BIT AND I THINK IT SLOWED IT DOWN JUST A LITTLE BIT THAT WHEN I STOPPED AND HE WRAPPED IT.>>BOOM.>>YEAH.>>THERE’S NO DOUBT IN YOUR MIND WHEN THEY HIT. (WIND SOUNDS)>>LET’S DO IT AGAIN.>>YEAH, RIGHT.>>YOU KNOW, ONE THING I LIKE TO DO WHEN WE’RE DRAGGING PLASTICS IS I ACTUALLY LIKE TO PITCH IT KIND OF DIAGONALLY TOWARDS SHORE AND THEN ACTUALLY LET THAT BAIT FADE BACK BEHIND THE BOAT. WHAT THAT’S DOING IS BASICALLY IT’S CHANGING THE SPEED OF THAT PLASTIC. SOMETIMES AS IT’S ACTUALLY GOING STRAIGHT BACK BEHIND THE BOAT AND IF IT’S A LONG WAYS BACK THERE YOUR LINE ACTUALLY FLATTENS OUT A LITTLE BIT AND IT’S A LOT DIFFERENT WHEN YOU’RE IN HEAVY CURRENT AND ACTUALLY MAKING SOME BOTTOM CONTACT. SO, WHEN YOU’RE DRAGGING PLASTICS DON’T EXPECT IT TO BE JUST BUMPING OFF THE BOTTOM AND FEEL IT CONSTANTLY, SOMETIMES YOU ACTUALLY HAVE TO WATCH YOUR ROD TIP JUST SO YOU’RE MAKING SOME BOTTOM CONTACT. SO, IF I’M NOT SEEING IT ACTUALLY BOUNCE EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE, I’LL LET A LITTLE LINE OUT. IF IT’S BOUNCING ALL THE TIME, I’LL REEL IT IN A LITTLE BIT. SO, YOU DON’T WANT TO DRAG ON THE BOTTOM BUT YOU WANT TO HAVE SOME CONTACT. (INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC)>>THAT THING JUST WHACKED, WHACKED THAT THING. (LAUGHS) I’LL GET REELED IN HERE AND GIVE YOU A HAND.>>AND HE ABSOLUTELY JUST THUMPED THAT BAIT. YOU KNOW, WHAT WE’RE HAVING TO DO HERE WITH THIS REALLY DIRTY WATER IS WE’RE USING ACTUALLY A PRETTY BIG PROFILE BAIT AND IT’S GOT A LOT OF THUMP TO IT. SO, WE’RE GETTING SOME VIBRATION. IT’S A BIG BAIT, AND THEN, YOU KNOW, A FAIRLY BRIGHT COLOR. SO, I’VE ACTUALLY GONE TO A WHITE COLOR. YOU KNOW, FOR ME IN DIRTY WATER, LIKE A WHITE OR EVEN LIKE A CHARTREUSE COLOR OR A SILVER IS REALLY, REALLY A GOOD COLOR IN DARK, DIRTY WATER. AS YOU CAN SEE, WE’VE GOT MAYBE 10 INCHES OF WATER CLARITY. BOY, YOU CAN THEM UNTIL THEY REALLY POP THEIR HEAD UP.>>YEAH.>>YOU DON’T SEE EXACTLY WHAT’S COMING.>>THERE YOU GO. ALL RIGHT.>>OH, THERE YOU GO.>>NICE WORK.>>NICE FISH. SHE HAS GOT A MOUTHFUL OF THAT BAIT RIGHT THERE. LOOK AT THERE. IT’S FUNNY. I JUST GOT HER IN ABSOLUTELY JUST THE SKIN OF THE MOUTH. IT DOESN’T TAKE REALLY ANYTHING. THAT’S THE BAIT WE’RE USING RIGHT THERE. SO, YOU CAN SEE IT’S KIND OF A WHITE – IT’S GOT A LITTLE BIT OF IRIDESCENT HUE TO IT AND A REAL BIG THUMPER TAIL. SO, IT DOESN’T TAKE A LOT OF SPEED TO MOVE THIS BAIT HERE. SO, WE’RE MOVING RIGHT NOW, I THINK THE BOAT’S GOING ABOUT POINT TWO?>>POINT THREE, YEAH.>>POINT THREE MILES AN HOUR, AND THAT’S ENOUGH TO GET THAT BAIT, TO GET THAT TAIL TO GET SOME REALLY GOOD ACTION TO PUT FISH IN THE BOAT LIKE THIS HERE. SO, WHAT DO YOU THINK, JASON?>>I THINK IT’S A GREAT WAY TO SPEND A SPRING DAY. (LAUGHS)>>ALL RIGHT, SWEETHEART. THANKS FOR THE GOOD TIME. I THINK WE’RE ON TO SOMETHING.>>ALL RIGHT. I WONDER IF WE SHOULD JUST GO RIGHT BACK UP AND COME RIGHT BACK THROUGH THERE, HUH?>>I THINK THAT STRETCH IS PRODUCING. LET’S DO THAT SAME EXACT THING. (INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC)>>IT DOESN’T TAKE ME LONG. I’M BACK IN THE WATER RIGHT AWAY. (INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC)>>OH, THERE’S A GOOD FISH HERE, CHRIS. I’M GONNA COME AROUND THE OTHER SIDE.>>ALL RIGHT. IT’S ALL YOURS, BUDDY.>>ALL RIGHT. YOU KNOW, WE’RE JUST MAKING A GOOD CAST BEHIND THE BOAT JUST TO MAKE SPORADIC BOTTOM CONTACT. JUST A SLOW DRAG AND WE’RE NOT EVEN TWITCHING THESE BAITS. IT’S JUST A REALLY AN EASY WAY TO FISH. THIS CURRENT IS JUST STRONG ENOUGH AND JUST FLOWING FAST ENOUGH TO GET THOSE PADDLE TAILS THUMPING. THAT’S THE KEY. JUST ENOUGH WATER DISPLACEMENT WHERE IT’S A BIG ENOUGH SILHOUETTE WHERE THESE FISH CAN FIND IT. HERE HE COMES.>>IT SEEMS LIKE THOSE BIG ONES GET ONE MORE RUN WHEN THEY GET TO THE BOAT.>>YEAH. HERE SHE COMES. WHOA.>>THAT’S HIS SECOND, OR HER SECOND.>>DON’T YOU LOVE THIS? (INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC)>>THERE WE GO.>>NICE. ALL RIGHT. THANK YOU.>>YEAH.>>YOU SEE HOW PALE THESE FISH ARE? NOW THESE FISH ARE TRANSITION FISH COMING OUT OF LAKE OF THE WOODS. WE’RE ON — I CAN’T EVEN BEGIN TO GUESS HOW MANY WALLEYES LIVE IN LAKE OF THE WOODS, BUT WHEN THEY COME UP INTO THIS RIVER THERE ARE JUST A LOT OF WALLEYES. I CAN’T EVEN IMAGINE HOW MANY WALLEYES PER SQUARE MILE YOU’RE GOING TO FIND UP IN SOME OF THIS WATER, BUT JUST A, JUST AN INCREDIBLE SPRING FISHING OPPORTUNITY. ALL RIGHT. THERE! WHOO! LOVE THAT. BOY, THEY JUST, YOU’RE JUST GOING ALONG, JUST DRAGGING AND EVERY ONCE IN WHILE YOU’RE GOING TO FEEL A LITTLE BIT OF BOTTOM, BUT THERE’S NOT A LOT OF STUFF ON THE BOTTOM THOUGH AS FAR AS MAKING BOTTOM CONTACT, AND JUST WHAM! I MEAN, THERE ISN’T EVEN A DOUBT IN YOUR MIND. THIS ISN’T A FINESSE BITE. THESE FISH JUST DRILL IT. IT’S JUST A FUN WAY TO CATCH A WALLEYE. YOU KNOW, THERE’S FAIRLY MODERATE CURRENT. I WOULDN’T SAY THIS IS SLACK WATER BY ANY MEANS. AND TYPICALLY YOU’RE YOU’RE GOING TO FIND THESE FISH CLOSE TO THE CURRENT, JUST NOT OVERPOWERING CURRENT. AND TYPICALLY YOU’LL FEEL ON YOUR TROLLING MOTOR, THAT’S PROBABLY THE BIGGEST INDICATOR IS, YOU KNOW, YOU MAYBE TAKE FOUR OR FIVE POWER, THAT’LL PUSH YOU ALONG AT POINT THREE, POINT FOUR MILES AN HOUR, POINT TWO MILES AN HOUR, YOU’RE GAINING GROUND. THAT’S USUALLY KIND OF THE WATER WHERE WE’RE FINDING THESE FISH, BUT THERE’S NOT A LOT OF OBVIOUS SEAMS OR CURRENT BREAKS IN HERE BUT WHAT IS IS THIS BOTTOM DROPS DOWN AND IT’S PRETTY FLAT BUT THERE’S JUST SAWTOOTH DIPS THAT THESE FISH ARE LAYING IN. AND DRAGGING JIGS IS JUST A GREAT WAY TO COVER THESE TYPES OF SPOTS. IF YOU IMAGINE THE BOTTOM OF THE RIVER, THERE’LL BE JUST LITTLE DIPS THAT ARE CUT OUT AND A LOT OF TIMES THESE WALLEYES WILL LAY IN THE DIPS. SOMETIMES THERE MIGHT BE SOME SCATTERED CHUNK ROCK, SOME SCATTERED ROCK, MAYBE SOME OLD LOGS. A LOT OF TIMES IT SEEMS LIKE WHERE YOU GET A FEW SNAGS, A LOT OF TIMES THAT’S WHERE YOU’RE CATCHING SOME FISH. AND SO YOUR ELECTRONICS ARE CRUCIAL TO SEE THE BOTTOM SO THAT YOU CAN FIND THE STRUCTURE AND THEN A LOT OF TIMES YOU’RE ALSO GOING TO FIND FISH. (INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC)>>I JUST LITERALLY, LITERALLY PUT THAT BACK DOWN THERE. I THINK IT TOUCHED THE BOTTOM AND HE HIT IT. (INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC) (GRUNTING)>>THERE! ALL RIGHT. THAT FISH WOULD LOOK GOOD IN GREASE.>>HE DEFINITELY WOULD. HE DEFINITELY WOULD. THEY’RE OF ALL SIZES. (INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC)>>BOY, HE ATE THAT GRUB.>>YEAH.>>LET HIM GO. (INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC)>>SO EVERY YEAR WE HAVE WHAT WE CALL THE “RAINY DAZE RIVER RUN,” AND WHAT IT IS WE HAVE A GROUP OF ANGLERS THAT COME TOGETHER. WE MEET AT THE AMERICINN HOTEL RIGHT ON THE WEST END OF INTERNATIONAL FALLS AND WE BASICALLY HAVE AN OPENING NIGHT CEREMONY WHERE I DO A SEMINAR. AND THIS YEAR WE WERE FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO HAVE JASON MITCHELL HERE AND HE DID A SEMINAR, AND WE HAVE ALL OF OUR CAPTAINS GET TOGETHER AND WE SHARE A BUNCH OF INFORMATION IN REGARDS TO THE BITE THAT’S ON THE RIVER AND THINGS THAT ARE WORKING, THINGS THAT AREN’T WORKING, AND THEN THE ANGLERS GO OUT AND DO IT ON THEIR OWN. AND IT’S JUST A GREAT LEARNING ENVIRONMENT WHERE ANGLERS CAN COME FROM ANYWHERE LEARN ABOUT THE RAINY RIVER AND, OF COURSE, HAVE A CHANCE TO GET IN ON THIS REALLY MAGNIFICENT BITE. THAT’S A GOOD FISH RIGHT THERE. (LAUGHS)>>WHERE’S THE BACK RAIL? WHERE’S THE BACK RAIL? OH, THIS NEVER GETS OLD HERE. YOU KNOW, IT’S REALLY IMPORTANT WHEN YOU COME UP HERE AND YOU’RE FISHING THESE BIG FISH HERE IN THE RAINY RIVER TO, TO HANDLE THEM PROPERLY. SO, YOU KNOW, WHEN WE’RE, AS YOU’VE PROBABLY NOTICED A COUPLE OF THE FISH THAT WE’RE CATCHING A LOT OF TIMES WE’LL LEAVE THE NET RIGHT IN THE WATER. WE’LL LEAVE THE FISH RIGHT IN THE WATER. UNHOOK IT AND WE’LL GET A QUICK PICTURE AND FROM THEN ON JUST RELEASE THE FISH PROPERLY. SO, THE FISH ON THE RAINY RIVER ARE PROTECTED. SO, YOU CAN KEEP A COUPLE SMALLER FISH TO KEEP IF YOU WANT TO EAT A COUPLE FISH, BUT PREDOMINANTLY THESE BIG FEMALES WE NEED TO TAKE REALLY, REALLY GOOD CARE OF THEM. SO, CATCH A FISH, QUICK PICTURE, GET THEM BACK IN THE WATER. WHEN YOU STARTED TO “S” CURVE THERE, YOU KIND OF MOVED THAT BOAT BACK AND FORTH, I THINK JUST THAT, THAT CHANGE OF SPEED REALLY TRIGGERED THAT FISH TO BITE.>>ALL RIGHT. I’LL JUST HIT THE ANCHOR HERE AND CRAWL UP. HOW DOES HE FEEL? GRAB THE NET HERE.>>I DON’T THINK HE’S GOING TO BREAK ANY WORLD RECORDS HERE.>>HE’LL BE A GOOD EATER. (LAUGHS)>>YEAH. THAT’S NOT A BAD… HE WANTED IT THOUGH. WHEN THEY OPEN THEIR MOUTH IN THE CURRENT YOU FEEL…>>ALL RIGHT, WELL, THEY ALL ADD UP.>>YOU KNOW, TYPICALLY WHAT WE’RE SEEING IS THIS FISH WILL START TO MIGRATE FROM LAKE OF THE WOODS UP THE RAINY RIVER HERE USUALLY SOMEWHERE IN ABOUT THE MIDDLE OF MARCH THEY’LL START TO MAKE THAT PUSH FROM LAKE OF THE WOODS AND THE GAP, AND THEY’LL MOVE UP THE RIVER HERE, AND WE’LL DO A LOT OF SIDE IMAGING FOR STRUCTURE. AND YOU’LL SEE SOME PRETTY BIG PODS OF FISH IN CERTAIN AREAS. BUT EVERY YEARS IS REALLY DIFFERENT, WHICH IS WHAT MAKES THE RAINY RIVER SO MUCH FUN. SO, ONCE YOU THINK YOU’VE GOT IT ALL FIGURED OUT THE NEXT YEAR IT’S DIFFERENT, IT MIGHT BE DIFFERENT FLOW OR CLARITY, MAYBE THE ICE WENT OUT LATER. BUT THERE’S A LOT OF DIFFERENT THINGS THAT REALLY ADJUST THE MOVEMENT OF THE FISH FROM LAKE OF THE WOODS INTO THE RAINY RIVER.>>HOW’S HE FEEL?>>UH, HE FEELS PRETTY SOLID. HE LOOKS GOOD. (LAUGHS)>>THAT ROD IS JUST… BENT OVER.>>HE’S HEADING FOR SHORE. I’M GOING TO HAVE TO DO A LITTLE JOCKEYING AROUND HERE. THERE WE GO!>>ALL RIGHT! NICE WORK. NICE.>>PRETTY DARN GOOD WORK WITH THE NET THERE.>>I DON’T MIND RUNNING THE NET. (LAUGHS)>>ALL RIGHT.>>SO THE EVENT ITSELF BASICALLY COVERS THREE NIGHT’S LODGING, YOUR MEALS, YOUR EVENING MEALS, AND THEN A CONTINENTAL BREAKFAST. IT INCLUDES YOUR SEMINARS AND REALLY GUIDE HELP IS WHAT WE CALL IT. SO, I HAVE ALL OF OUR CAPTAINS THAT ARE THERE EACH NIGHT AND THEY SHARE INFORMATION BEYOND THE SEMINARS FROM MYSELF AND JASON MITCHELL, AND REALLY HELP ALL THE ANGLERS LEARN ABOUT THE RIVER AND GIVE THEM THE ULTIMATE OPPORTUNITIES TO SUCCEED WHILE FISHING HERE ON THE RAINY RIVER.>>OH, THERE’S A GOOD FISH. (INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC)>>I’M GONNA BRING HIM UP THE BACK HERE. HE’S A GOOD FISH. (INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC)>>YOU JUST HAD A BITE IN THERE TOO, DIDN’T YOU?>>I DID. I WAS STICKING IN THERE TRYING TO GET ONE MORE. (LAUGHS)>>COME ON UP HERE. (INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC)>>HERE HE COMES.>>WHAT DO YOU GOT THERE, JASON?>>I DON’T KNOW. HE’S COMING ALIVE NOW. YOU KNOW, THIS CURRENT JUST MAKES THEM SO MUCH STRONGER. IT JUST GIVES THEM A LITTLE BIT MORE HORSEPOWER. (INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC)>>OH, YEAH. NICE WALLEYE FISH.>>GOOD FISH, BUDDY. (INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC)>>COME ON.>>THERE YOU GO.>>OH, COME ON.>>ALL RIGHT.>>I NEED YOU TO GRAB MY LEGS.>>YEAH. THERE. I’LL GET THIS SIZMIC SHAD OUT OF HER. THERE WE GO. BOY, JUST A CHUNK OF A FISH. THERE! THAT’S THE, THAT’S A KALIN’S SIZMIC SHAD THAT’S BEEN DOING ALL THE DAMAGE. BUT YEAH, JUST A GORGEOUS WALLEYE RIGHT THERE. GORGEOUS FISH. BEAUTIFUL. GET HER IN THE WATER HERE, BUT YEAH, JUST A COOL OPPORTUNITY TO CATCH BIG FISH IN THE SPRING. A LOT OF SEASONS ARE CLOSED, BUT YOU CAN COME UP AND JUST CATCH SOME BIG FISH. I MEAN, YOU JUST CRANK ON THEM UP HERE. PREDOMINANTLY CATCH AND RELEASE, OBVIOUSLY, FOR THE BIG FISH. YOU CAN KEEP A FEW SMALL FISH TO EAT. BUT IT’S ONE OF THE FIRST OPPORTUNITIES TO GET A BOAT THAT’S WHAT MAKES IT SO SPECIAL AND, YOU KNOW, ANYTIME YOU DROP A JIG BELOW THE BOAT IN THIS TYPE OF WATER YOU’VE GOT THAT CHANCE TO CATCH THAT 30-INCH FISH AND YOU CAN’T SAY THAT FOR EVERYWHERE. AND SO, JUST A REALLY SPECIAL FISHING OPPORTUNITY. I JUST, I JUST LOVE THIS PLACE. I DON’T KNOW HOW YOU CANNOT HELP BUT FALL IN LOVE WITH THIS. YOU FISH IT ONCE AND YOU’RE HOOKED, I SWEAR TO GOD. UNBELIEVABLE.

  1. 👍😁👢🐡🐟🐡🐟🐬🐋🐳 the first one was stuffing material good video James KCMO

  2. What length and action of blank were you using for those heavier jigs and fighting the big fish in the current?

  3. do you think this tactic would work on the Tennessee river? right now temps are ranging from 46-52 depending on the section of river. Also would this tactic work at night? or would you change color? I am in Knoxville TN, and would love to use this tactic next time out.

  4. Make sure to leave a comment. Let us know what you want to see in upcoming videos. Remember to comment!

  5. Excellent informational video. Will this method work thru summer? This is extremely similar to my home water.
