Driving through water can cause long-term car damage

LEN JENNINGS, KMBC 9 NEWS. KRIS: TODAY’S DOWNPOURS AND WATER RESCUES REMIND US ALL HOW FAST WATER CAN RISE BECOMING DANGEROUS. LARA: IT CAN ALSO CAUSE A LOT OF DAMAGE THAT’S INVISIBLE TO YOU — UNTIL IT’S TOO LATE. KMBC 9’S KELLY ECKERMAN GOT A LOOK AT SOME OF THOSE HIDDEN PROBLEMS. KELLY: DRIVING INTO HIGH WATER CAN PUT EVERYONE INSIDE THE VEHICLE IN DANGER. EVEN IF YOU GET OUT OF A WATER RESCUE SAFELY, YOU CAR COULD HAVE LONG-LASTING EFFECTS. WE SEE IT ALL THE TIME — PEOPLE TAKING RISKS WITH HIGH WATER. BUT IF YOU STALL, OR YOUR CAR IS EVEN PARTLY SUBMERGED FOR ANY LENGTH OF TIME, BAD THINGS MAY BE HAPPENING UNDER YOUR CAR. THIS IS YOUR DIFFERENTIAL. THIS IS WHAT DRIVES YOUR WHEELS. KELLY: ELWOOD RAHN TOOK ME UNDERNEATH A VEHICLE TO SHOW ME WHAT WATER DAMAGE CAN DO TO PARTS NOT DESIGNED TO BE SUBMERGED IN WATER. SHOULD WATER BE OVER THE TOP OF THIS, THAT BREATHER CAN DRAW WATER INTO THIS DIFFERENTIAL, RUSTING OUT THE INTERNAL PARTS OF THIS DIFFERENTIAL AND CAUSING YOU ISSUES. KELLY: THE THING IS, YOUR CAR MAY DRIVE OK AFTER BEING SUBMERGED IN WATER. IT MIGHT BE MONTHS LATER YOU REALIZE SOMETHING’S WRONG, WHEN YOUR MECHANIC POINTS OUT RUSTING IN YOUR TRANSMISSION OR ANY NUMBER OF PARTS OR ELECTRICAL SYSTEM MALFUNCTIONS. SO THREE MONTHS DOWN THE ROAD, YOU FIGURE YOU GOT AWAY WITH IT, AND YOUR CARS FALLING APART AND YOU DON’T KNOW WHY. IT’S JUST A GOOD IDEA NOT TO GO INTO HIGH WATER UNLESS YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO, AND I CAN’T IMAGINE WHY YOU HAVE TO. YOU CAN ALWAYS TURN AROUND. KELLY: IF YOU KNOW THE UNDERCARRIAGE OF YOUR VEHICLE SAT IN WATER, THERE ARE THINGS MECHANICS CAN DO TO DRY IT OUT. JUST DON’T WAIT TO HAVE IT CHECKED OUT. AND RAHN RECOMMENDS THINKING OF THE UNDERSIDE OF YOUR CAR LIKE YOUR CELL PHONE. YOU KNOW IT CAN WITHSTAND A FEW DROPS OF RAIN. YOU WOULDN’T SOAK IT IN A PUDDLE

  1. …hopefully these parts on YOUR vehicles aren't made out of iron alone lolol – why is it so common for newscasters to use fear tactics to steer the population? I get it, "Turn around, don't drown", but come on!

  2. The news lady took out her phone but forgot to tell the viewers to set it to airplane mode and you'll have no problem driving over it then

  3. I have a Nissan maxima 2010 and when through a puddle fast, a few days later I turn the car on to start it, and it shuts off, I have to step on on the gas so it stays on. Don't know what happened?

  4. How can you turn around on a one way system with cars bibbing all around?
