Electrofishing at St. Stephen’s Dam

The Department of Natural Resources staff members are collecting broodstock for Bayless Fish Hatchery We are currently below the St. Stephen’s rediversion canal that feeds into the Santee River Notice the arms with lines hanging into the water They are sending electrical currents into the water which temporarily stun the fish sending them to the surface The fish will recover within seconds back to their full health We are targeting larger striped bass to be used for hatchery reproduction If you turn to the back of the boat as the fish are netted you will see them going into the live well You will also see shad and gar pop up to the surface Within months fingerling striped bass will be returned to state waters to continue growing for public fishing opportunities Thank you for joining and see you on the water
