Flood-prone Capitola braces for big downpours, gusts

8 AT 6:00 . GOOD EVENING, I AM DAN GREEN. I AM ERIN CLARK. WE PREPARE FOR A POWERFUL STORM THAT IS HEADING OUR WAY. /FLOODS, HIGH SURF ADVISORIES GOING INTO EFFECT IN A FEW HOURS. WE ARE ALREADY SEEING HIGH SURF AHEAD OF THE STORM. WE BEGIN WITH PHIL GOMEZ LIVE IN CAPITOLA, WHERE MANY WERE FILLING UP SANDBAGS. AFTER SUFFERING THROUGH MONTHS OF DROUGHT CONDITIONS, PEOPLE ARE SCRAMBLING FOR THE POWERFUL STORM THAT WILL CAUSE ALL KINDS OF PROBLEMS. THERE WAS PLENTY OF SOUND OUTSIDE — SAND OUTSIDE CITY HALL IN CAPITOLA, BUT AS MORE PEOPLE BEGAN SHOWING UP LOOKING TO PREPARE, A FLOOD OF PEOPLE OUTSIDE THE CITY DEPLETED THE SUPPLY. ALL THE HARDWARE STORES ARE ALREADY GONE WITH SANDBAGS. THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH SANDBAGS. THIS STORM IS EXPECTED TO BRING A LOT OF RAINFALL IN A SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME. JUST WANTED TO MAKE SURE WE WEREN’T GETTING WATER INSIDE. CREWS MADE SURE STORM DRAINS WERE OPEN. WE SENT OUT NOTIFICATIONS TO THE LOWER VILLAGE AREA THAT THEY CAN EXPECT FLOODING. THESE BE PREPARED. THAT’S WHAT A CAPITOLA BUSINESS OWNER WAS DOING. SANDBAGS LINED THE ENTRANCE OF BUSINESSES IN THE AREA. IT’S BETTER TO BE PREPARED THAN NOT AT ALL. THIS IS MY FIRST YEAR AS A BUSINESS OWNER HERE. I DO NOT WANT ANYTHING TO GO WRONG. IF YOU WANT TO GET SANDBAGS, ALL THEY HAVE HERE ARE SHOVELS AND SAND. BRING YOUR OWN SAND.
