How to Use a Dental Dam

Hi, I’m Sammy from Health Education and Promotion
and today I’ll be showing you how to use the dental dam. The dental dam can be used for
oral sex with a vagina or oral sex with an anus, which is commonly known as rimming. The first step before even reaching for the dam is to establish consent and communication
between partners. You want to make sure that both and your partner have given consent and
are enthusiastically willing participants for the sexual act about to happen. It is
important that both of you are on the same page and that you have talked about your likes,
dislikes and boundaries. Next you will want check the packaging of the dental dam,
first think about how the dental dam was stored. You want to make sure the dental dam was stored
in a cool place without a lot of friction because lots of friction and heat can cause
the dental dam to degrade. So, if your dental dam has been stored on your card dashboard
or in your wallet for an extended period of time, you’ll definitely want to get a new one.
You’ll also want to check the packaging to make sure that it is still intact. This ensures
that the dental dam hasn’t been damaged in any way. The dental dam is large rectangle
piece of latex and helps to protect against STI transmission. Before using the dental
dam, take a permeant marker and write an irreversible letter in the corner like “R” or “CAR”. By
writing an irreversible letter, you’ll know which side is for which partner if you set
down the dental dam at some point. Dental dams are not reusable so after use throw it
away in the trash. If the dental dam breaks and you are concerned about STI transmission,
you can call the Advice Nurse who is available 24/7. For more information about STI testing,
you can visit the Student Health and Counseling Services website. This has been a demonstration
of the dental dam. If you are interested in the dental dam, dental dams are available at the Love
Lab upon request. If you have a latex allergy or are interested in ways to make the dental
dam if you don’t have one on hand, you can visit our other video about alternative ways
to make the dental dam. If you have any questions or want to pick up safer sex products, you
can visit the Love Lab located at the Health Education and Promotion office during
office hours and in the ARC lobby on Thursday nights.
