Japanese Coastal Town Before And After 2011 Tsunami

NARRATOR: Jay sees parallels
between Seaside and the Japanese town
of Minamisanriku, a town that used to look
like this. Shinichi Sato captured the
former beauty of Minamisanriku in photos. But on March 11, 2011,
he watched through his lens as his town was washed away. [ ♪♪♪ ] [ speaking in Japanese ] TRANSLATOR: This is a place
where I evacuated and took the first photograph. My eye caught the largest number
of people at the disaster prevention
center. I saw roughly 20 people
standing on the roof. I was afraid they might not
be able to escape. NARRATOR:
Shinichi lost many friends and a town he loved that day. But he says many people died
because they sought high ground based on what they knew
from past tsunamis. It was not high enough.
