Madison man moves to Cedar Rapids, buys home in flood zone

I’M STANDING ON THE PORCH OF A HOME IN ONE OF THE RESIDENTIAL FLOOD ZONES. THIS HOME IS OWNED BY ART HACKETT WHO MOVED TO CEDAR RAPIDS LESS THAN 2 MONTHS AGO FROM MADISON, WISCONSIN. HACKETT SAYS ALTHOUGH HE WAS AWARE OF THE FLOOD OF 2008 HE HAD NO IDEA ANOTHER FLOOD OF THIS MAGNITUDE WAS EXPECTED IN EASTERN IOWA. PKG: NAT: “HI I’M ART HACKETT I LIVE UP IN 2004…” TAKE VO: CEDAR RAPIDS RESIDENT, ART HACKETT, DESCRIBES HIMSELF AS A MADISON MAN WHO MOVED TO THE HAWKEYE STATE TO BE CLOSER TO HIS FAMILY. SOT: “WE REALIZED HOW MUCH EASIER AND BETTER IT WAS TO HAVE THE GRANDPARENT AND THE KID IN THE SAME CITY.” TAKE VO: HACKETT SAYS THE MOVE WASN’T NECESSARILY EASY, BUT FINDING THE HOME OF HIS DREAMS CERTAINLY MADE FOR A SMOOTHER TRANSITION. SOT: “WE KNEW THAT WE KNEW THIS HOUSE HAD FLOODED BUT BECAUSE THE 2008 FLOOD WAS SO EXTREME, WE SAID LET’S ROLL THE DICE. THIS HOUSE WAS AN EXTREMELY NICE HOUSE IT WAS IN EXACTLY THE NEIGHBORHOOD WE WANTED AND THE PRICE WAS RIGHT.” TAKE VO: AND IN ROLLING DICE, HACKETT CAN’T NECESSARILY SAY HE CAME UP ON THE WINNING SIDE BECAUSE THE IMPACT OF THE FLOODWATERS ON HIS HOME HAVE YET TO BE ACCESSED. SOT: “IF I CAN SEE OUT FRONT, KIND OF WHERE THE WATER LINES ARE, IT’LL GIVE ME AN IDEA OF WHETHER I GOT A LOT OF WATER IN MY BASEMENT OR MAYBE JUST SOME SEWER BACKUP.” TAKE VO: HACKETT AND MANY OF HIS NEIGHBORS LIVING IN THE FLOOD ZONE WERE ASKED TO EVACUATE THEIR HOMES. HE SAYS ALTHOUGH THIS YEAR’S FLOOD HASN’T MADE FOR WARMEST WELCOME TO THE AREA, HE KNOWS THE DAMAGE AND DEVESTATION COULD’VE BEEN MUCH WORSE. LOOK LIVE: NOW FROM THE OUTSIDE LOOKING IN, IT DOESN’T SEEM AS IF THERE WAS MUCH WATER DAMAGE TO THE HOME, BUT OF COURSE HACKETT WON’T KNOW FORSURE UNTIL HE REMOVES THE SANDBAGS AND TAKES A LOOK AROUND HIS HOME. HE TOLD ME HE EVACUATED SUNDAY EVENINGAND HE AND HIS WIFE ARE STAYING WITH THEIR SON AND GRANDCHILDREN UNTIL OFFICIALS GIVE THEM THE OKAY TO MOVE BACK IN.
