Pine River Fish Passage Project Awarded $1.2 Million Grant To Complete Construction

>>Dennis: HI, EVERYONE, THANKS FOR JOINING US TONIGHT. A $1.2 MILLION GRANT THAT WAS AWARDED BY THE OUTDOOR HERITAGE COUNCIL WILL NOW FUND THE PINE RIVER FISH PASSAGE IN CROW WING COUNTY. A PROJECT THAT WILL REBUILD THE ECOLOGICAL HEALTH OF FISH AND AQUATIC LIFE. DESTINY HAS THE DETAILS.>>MINNESOTA DNR, U.S. ARMY ENGINEERS, CROW WING COUNTY, ELECTED OFFICIALS AND MORE ALL CAME TOGETHER TO CELEBRATE THE GROUND-BREAKING CEREMONY OF THE PINE RIVER FISH PASSAGE PROJECT. A PROJECT THAT WILL BENEFIT BOTH WILDLIFE AND THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES. >>THE ORIGINAL ROCK DAM WAS BUILT 50 YEARS AGO BASICALLY TO CREATE BIG PINE LAKE BEFORE THE DAM WAS IN PLACE, THE LAKE WAS MORE OF A SWAMP OR A WETLAND, SO THE ROCK DAM WAS PERMITTED IN 1970, CREATED WHAT IS BIG PINE LAKE TODAY, AND HAS BEEN A MAINTENANCE ISSUE FOR THE LAST 20 TO 30 YEARS.>>THIS NEW PROJECT IS CONSIDERED TO BE A LONG-TERM FIX, AND WILL REDUCE MAINTENANCE, LOWER COUNTY AND LAKE ASSOCIATION EXPENSES, AND CREATE A LOWER LAKE LEVEL FOR THE RESIDENTS.>>CREATE A DESIGN THAT WILL ALLOW FOR THE FLUCTUATION AND WATER FLOW THROUGH THE RIVER BEING CONTROLLED BY THE ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS DAM, SO FROM THERE WE CAME UP WITH AN ENGINEERED CONSTRUCTION PLAN THAT CONSISTS OF FIVE DIFFERENT ARCH RAPIDS SEPARATED BY DEEPER POOLS THAT WILL ALLOW FOR FISH PASSAGE. >>WE DID HAVE SOME DIFFICULTIES THAT WERE BEYOND OUR CONTROL. THERE WAS A BREACH IN THE DAM THAT HAD TO HAVE EMERGENCY REPAIRS MADE TO IT. SO THE PROJECT HAD TO BE PHASED AND BROKEN INTO TWO PROJECTS. SO WE COMPLETED PHASE ONE IN JUNE OF 2016. >>THE MAIN PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT IS TO REBUILD ECOLOGICAL HEALTH OF FISH AND OTHER AQUATIC LIFE ON THE PINE FEEDER STREAMS, WETLANDS AND LAKES. ENGINEERED TO RESTORE NATURAL FLOWS, SPAWNING HABITAT AND IN STREAM CYCLING.>>SO IT’S ENVIRONMENTALLY AND ECOLOGICALLY VERY IMPORTANT BECAUSE IT WILL IMPROVE THE POPULATIONS OF, AT THE LOWER END OF THE FOOD CHAIN, WHICH WILL TRICKLE UP, AND THAT’S ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECTS OF THAT, WHICH IS CRITICAL TO THE ECONOMIC HEALTH OF OUR COMMUNITY, THE ECOLOGICAL HEALTH, THEY GO HAND IN HAND.>>REPORTING IN CROSSLAKE, DESTINY WIGGINS, LAKELAND NEWS.>>>THE MINNESOTA POLLUTION CONTROL AGENCY WILL ALSO TRACK
