Possible Dam Failure Forces Massive Evacuations

NEARLY 200,000 PEOPLE WERE
EVACUATED FROM THEIR HOMES IN CALIFORNIA DUE TO A SEVERE
INFO STRUCTURE ISSUE THAT COULD HAVE FLOODED THAT PART OF
THE STATE. ABOUT 188,000 RESIDENTS NEAR
ORAL BILL, CALIFORNIA, WERE ORDERED TO ACTIVATE SUNDAY AFTER
A HOLE IN AN EMERGENCY SPILLWAY IN THE ORAL VILLE DAM THREATENED
TO FLOOD THE SURROUNDING AREA.” THERE IS NO FEAR OF IT
COLLAPSING, BUT THERE ARE THESE SO-CALLED SPILLWAYS. SO, WHEN THERE ARE HEAVY RAINS,
THEY USE THE SPILLWAY IN ORDER TO REROUTE THE WATER IN A
DIFFERENT DIRECTION, SO IT DOESN’T OVER FLOOD, OR FLOOD THE
AREA. NOW, I’M AN IDIOT, SO I DIDN’T
EXPLAIN THAT PERFECTLY, BUT LUCKILY WE HAVE A VIDEO THAT
DOES, LET’S TAKE A LOOK. THE MASSIVE RESERVOIR WAS AT
OVER 100% CAPACITY THIS WEEKEND. ENGINEERS SPOTTED AND EROSION
SCARRED NEAR THE SPILLWAY. THE TALLEST DAM IN THE NATION, A
SOARING 770 FEET, IT SITS ABOVE SEVERAL COMMUNITIES IN BUTTE,
SUTTER COUNTIES. THE PRIMARY SPILLWAY WAS
DAMAGED LAST WEEK. NOW, HE SCRAMBLED TO GET IT
FIXED BEFORE THE NEXT STORM AND MORE RAIN. YOU CAN SEE THAT COMING
SPILLWAY, AND THEY ARE RUSHING TO FIX IT, BUT LUCKILY THEY
AVOIDED A COMPLETE COULD ñ COMPLETE CATASTROPHE. THE LAKE LEVEL REACHED ITS PEAK
OF 902.59 FEET AT ABOUT 3 AM ON SUNDAY, AND DROPPED TO
898′ BY 4 A.M. MONDAY. WATER FLOWS OVER THE EMERGENCY
SPILLWAY AT 901 FEET. SO, THEY MANAGED TO AVOID A
DISASTER, BUT THERE ARE STORMS COMING IN A DAY OR SO. WE’LL HAVE THE FULL LENGTH OF
THE VIDEO THAT WE SHOWED IN THE DESCRIPTION BOX. AND DAMMIT JIM, WE ARE NOT
SCIENTISTS, WE ARE TALKSHOW HOSTS. SO, NOW, THIS SHOWS YOU WHAT WE
MEAN BY INFRASTRUCTURE PROBLEMS. SO, IT’S NOT THEORETICAL, IT’S
REAL, AND IF A BRIDGE IS TOO OLD, SOMETIMES IT FALLS. AND IF A DAM IS TOO OLD OR
HASN’T BEEN TENDED TO ENOUGH, SOMETIMES IT BREAKS. AND WHEN A DAM BREAKS, IT AIN’T
PRETTY. NOW, IF TRUMP IS NOT FULL OF
IT, THE GOOD NEWS IS, THEY THINK IT’S A POPULIST
THING TO DO TO SPEND $1 TRILLION ON INFRASTRUCTURE. GREAT, YOU’VE GOT A DEAL. LET’S GO FIX ALL THOSE DAMS,
ROADWAYS, AND BRIDGES. NOW, I KNOW, I READ INTO THE
STORY AND THEY ARE PLANNING TO GIVE A LOT OF THAT IN
CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS TO THEIR DONORS. BUT DAMMIT, JUST FIX THE DAMN. REMEMBER WHEN OBAMA WANTED TO
SPEND 6700 BILLION, LESS THAN 1 TRILLION, ON ALL THE INFO
STRUCTURE SPENDING. THE REPUBLICANS WERE LIKE, THIS
IS OUT-OF-CONTROL SPENDING! BUT WHEN YOU DON’T SPEND IT ON
INFRASTRUCTURE, THIS HAPPENS. AND THAT THEY COME IN, LIKE, OH
YEAH, IDIOT, WE’RE GONNA GIVE 1 TRILLION FOR INFRASTRUCTURE
SPENDING, MOSTLY TO OUR FRIENDS. I DON’T REALLY CARE WHO THEY ARE
GOING TO GET THE CONTRACTS TOO, OF COURSE THEY’RE GOING TO GIVE
CONTEXT TO THEIR DONORS, THAT’S HOW POLITICS IN AMERICA WORKS,
BUT I DO LIKE THAT THERE IS A LITTLE BIT OF EMPHASIS ON FIXING
OUR INFRASTRUCTURE, AND HAVING AMERICAN TAXPAYER MONEY GOING
BACK INTO AMERICA. WE SPENT SO MUCH MONEY ON
PRIVATE CONTRACTORS, WEAPONS MANUFACTURING AND ALL
THIS ON WARS ABROAD, HOW ABOUT WE BRING SOME OF THAT MONEY BACK
INTO THE UNITED STATES? MAYBE HE SHOULD STOP TRYING TO
FEARMONGER OVER IRAN FOR A 2ND. ANOTHER THING THEY WANT TO DO,
NOT ONLY GIVE ALL THE CONTEXT OF THEIR DONORS, THEY
WANT TO PRIVATIZE THE HIGHWAYS. PLEASE DON’T DO THAT. YOU KNOW WHAT AND THAT
HAPPENING? YOU PAID THE BILL. SO, THEIR DONORS GET THE
IMMEDIATE MONEY, AND THEY PUT IT IN THEIR POCKET, AND
THEY FIXED THE HIGHWAY OR WHATEVER, AND THEN THEY OWN
THE HIGHWAY, AND THEN THEY CHARGE YOU FOR THE REST OF YOUR
LIFE. IT’S A DISASTER, TOLL ROADS ARE
A DISASTER. IF YOU ARE GOING TO SPEND PUBLIC
MONEY, GO AHEAD AND SPEND IT AND LET THE PUBLIC KEEP IT. DON’T PRIVATIZE THE DAMS, JUST
FIX THEM.

  1. So Trump is basically talking about a new New Deal? I wonder who did the first New Deal?

  2. Maybe they should have spent all the money illegals sucked out of the Californian taxpayer to fix that dam…. oh wait their donors don't like that they need cheap labour.

Illegal immigration is LITERALLY modern day slavery and Trump is the Lincoln who will go to wat to end it with this nee Confederacy of California.

  3. The hole you showed was the spillway which has a huge hole in it but that's not the REAL problem. The reason for the evacuations is that when the dam over filled by a foot and began flowing over the emergency spillway, so much water flowed over it that the emergency spillway(to the left of the spillway) has another huge hole. The dam water is leaking out from UNDER the dam. That is the problem they are fixing. The spillway will be repaired in the summer when there are NO releases of water.

  4. Where is Donald Trump? Will he arrive after the disaster or before or not at all?

  5. TYT Turns 15! Help Us Celebrate LIVE Wed Feb 15th 6pm EST http://www.tytnetwork.com/live

  6. You've got no chance of Trump helping to fix it because you guys didn't vote for him and you know how that Clown is

  7. Remember how the American infrastructure earned an "A+" rating from the ACSE, during its previous inspection?

    Yeah, me neither.

  8. In Spain the highways were privatized. The company lays the roads and can collect tolls for 20 years to cover the cost and make profit. After those 20 years the road becomes property of the government again, unless the company want to pay to keep their tolling for another x years

  9. Trump says he will put 1 trillion into infrastructure. Only you need to realize that just like they said a lot of it is going to donors, also Trump considers DAPL and The Mexican Boarder Wall infrastructure. So very little of that one trillion will go to actual infrastructure.

  10. Look up how many dam inspectors there are in comparison to the amount of dams nationwide.
    Talk about needed job creation.

  11. GOP in congress: theres no money for infrastructure, but here's $15 billion for the wall.

  12. You missed a great opportunity to say when the dam breaks it's a damn mess 😉 2:35

  13. Cut the military budget by 95%. Only need the National Guard and to defend 2 borders. Spend money on infrastructure. No brainer. Problem solved!

  14. Portugal privatized some of their roads and now we're spending more money than before so private companies don't have to bare the costs!! We were much better before.

  15. United States has terrible infrastructure problems. Put people to work and fix it!!

  16. http://www.damsafety.org/news/?p=c0fdade4-ab98-4679-be22-e3d7f14e124f
took literally seconds to find this site of the people in charge of overseeing the safety of US dams.
A few more seconds to find this page on the site and a few minutes to read it.
US dams are in a poor state and for the price of one and a half Mexico walls you can fix them.

  17. "We're not scientists, we're talk show hosts" yeah, no shit. We can tell when you make dumb ass videos supporting extremist left opinions like safe spaces, new gender pronouns and attacking actual scientists like Sam Harris.

  18. first off it's California's responsibility to take care of their infrastructure years passed f**** buck and kick the can down the road now things are coming back to haunt them

  19. Rick Perry said he'd make the tollways freeways once they had paid for themselves. Once he was in office and they had paid for themselves he sold them to his golfing buddy who up the prices forever. Our tax dollars go to build it so that we can pay absorbent rates to a private business to use it. Legal theft.

  20. holy shit, privatizing highways would be the stepping stone to a complete dictatorship – next in line: privatizing oxygen

  21. Hmmm. This isn't an issue where money wasn't available.. This issue of erosion was brought to the attention of officials about 10 years ago, but the officials dismissed it. Ask the Sierra Club about its efforts to get it done while being ignored..

  22. Depreciating?! Wut!?!? Infrastructure!?!? Wut!?!? The neglect of infrastructure in the U.S.tends to be normal across states and over many years though. Let's go back to some management basic kids: fix problems when they are small/cost less and document how/why the problem occurred for future decision making/improvement. Brought to you by: Wut!?!?!?

  23. If the government didn't blow tax payers money on military equipment that we are never going to use, then the dam would have been fixed.

  24. that damn has been in disrepair for a long time. Engineers did not just find an erosion scar this weekend. this is a case of neglect plain and simple

  25. Orwells' Dam collapsing from the hypocrisy of US politicians. We live in a south park episode.

  26. Hey Turds what happened to that drought that wasn't supposed to end due to climate change? Now this is due to climate change right? Also our privatised railroads are in alot better shape than our crappy public roads. You also pay for roads, they are called TOLL ROADS!

  27. yup…. gop has reactive planning.
fix it after it fails rather than spend the money first to fix it before a problem happens. Of course.. 12 years ago when it was a problem they didn't want to spend the money either.. So how did your spending money on bombing brown people work out for you there GOP tards?

  28. We may have to wait for major fixing until after the storm blows through.
But I'm just hoping some work actually gets done.

  29. our government sold the highways, 25 years later, we've been rob more than a trillion.

  30. The state of California taxes the hell outta its people and spends the money on illegal immigrants benefits, welfare and Spanish programs in public schools but spends nothing on the infrastructure.

  31. look at the lake powell dam, there were at one point, 20ft wide 50ft deep holes in the emergency spillway

  32. I'm a little disappointed. I thought for sure you delusional leftist bastards would find a way to blame this on President Trump.

  33. Better to build the wall, it would be a travesty of major proportions to throw money away on fixing that dam.

  34. Sorry but not, we don't forget that easily. It was not just the republicans that opposed the investment in infrastructure. The ones that succeed were the feminists, that argue that the stimulus package was too male. The fact that most of the people that lost their jobs were men (so any package that works will have more men than women jobs returned) was unimportant to them. The went to admit that the final package favored women (and that was great according to them) and also that the men were now dependent on women. They say that people that don't know the history is bound to repeat it:
    http://archive.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2008/11/28/the_macho_stimulus_plan/
    http://www.weeklystandard.com/article/17737
And that is one reason, that when Clinton say she is going to close many coal mines but she will care about the workers (mostly men) people with memory did not believe it (now we have her quoting genocidal essays)
    http://www.weeklystandard.com/article/17737
Many women voted for Trump, that is not surprising. When Clinton supporters were celebrating that men did not have jobs and women were working 2 turns, the women affected were not happy. From all the feminist sites the only one that did not saw that as a victory (celebrate when women hold the majority of jobs because they gain and not because men don't have jobs) was feministe.us . That is reality: Republicans oposed, republican states sometimes give the money to chinesse companies, but the one that succed derailing the plan were the feminists.

  35. Yeah the last few days have been pretty insane here in Oroville. Constant helicopters flying overhead. They are carrying big bags of boulders that they are dropping on the Aux Spillway to help prevent rapid erosion. If the Aux Spillway fails or causes a giant landslide like people are predicting, it could cause unpredictable and rapid flash flooding in our area (Oroville), and even downstream in Yuba City and even Sac. Crazy shit. The evacuation order has just been reduced to an advisory, so its safer for the moment, but we haven't had rain yet.

  36. I live in northern cal but higher up than Oroville by a hour, before the water reached the dam we had several heavy rain storms and weeks of just rain. and areas flooded, some community's were closed off due to rock and mud slides for more than a week. As of today the main road out if here is still closed. The roads are literally eroding off because some much water is going under the roads making them very dangerous. Already a cal trans worker trying to clear the roads died in a mud slide. When California was on fire the president spoke about us, now we are flooding and he is butthurt and hasn't mentioned us. We have another big storm due tomorrow and so many are scared and worried what this storm will bring when we are still flooded from the last set of storms.

  37. Your perverted state is now begging trump for money? Bahahahahah!!!!!! Keep dreaming libtards.

  38. "If it keeps on rainin', the levee's going to break.
If it keeps on rainin', the levee's going to break.
If the levee breaks, we'll have no place to stay."

    -Led Zepplin

  39. how can california leave the union if they can't even fix their own infrastructure? all talk like the crybabies who threatened to leave for canada if trump won

  40. I don't know the history behind Oroville, but many dams were always privately owned. Power companies and mills often built and maintained dams for their own purposes. In my state, this is how the vast majority of dams came to be.
The privatization Cenk is referring to is when governments spend money on public resources, then sell them to for-profit businesses.

  41. It is funny how TYT claims to be independent media but they rely on the mainstream media to get many of their videos they show.

  42. The Dems introduced an Infrastructure bill. They actually just copied Trump's promises from his campaign; so that the Republicans would have NO EXCUSE for going against Trump's promises. They did of course. I don't know if they even realized that Trump's promises were in the bill; they may have just voted against it because a Dem introduced it.

  43. The Lake Oroville Dam isn't under threat. The damaged spillway was inspected last year and called sound by experts. This isn't like the levees around Lake Pontchartrain that broke during Hurricane Katrina's landing, that the experts knew were weak and needed improvements. This is just "stuff happens". Things break sometimes. I don't think political hay should be made from it for either side, though if it helps to get infrastructure spending through Congress I'll be happy enough.

  44. on dams and lakes, TYT isn't experts, but on climate change they are…huh?
how is a privatized highway any different from a toll road?

  45. TYT… love you guys…..just FYI….. the whole story on the Oroville dam, you showed the main spillway. Yes it had severe erosion BUT it was actually the emergency spillway that almost collapsed

  46. The emergency spillway almost collapsed not the main spillway. I can't believe that these "experts" purposely allowed flood water over the emergency spillway onto BARE DIRT! Of course it eroded the entire hillside and started to seep UNDER the flimsy concrete barrier. Terrible construction!
Now it's pouring rain across California.
Poor people in Oroville…. their property value is $0.

  47. It is very true that all of our infrastructure has been criminally neglected. This is not the whole story. The Oroville Dam was constructed and designed as a co-project of the California Division of Water Resources and the Oman Corporation. Most of the concept and design was a responsibility of the State of California. It may be that the spillway needs work due to age and neglect. Another consideration is engineering problems that leads to failure of the spillway sluice. This has happened at several dams including one my dad worked on, Glen Canyon in Northern Arizona in 1983. This dam was less than 25 years old. Some things on a dam wear out on a dam but not a spillway. And even less so in arid climate areas such as Lake Powell and the Sacramento Valley. The infrastructure argument is in part, smokescreen. It is quite possible part of the problem is poor engineering. The politicians and corporations don't want to stand up to the economic disaster of that liability. —Capt. Mikey—

  48. Maybe if California didn't spend all its money on 'illegal" immigrants and free handouts, they might have money for infrastructure. Maybe if California wasn't so brainwashed, they would could get rid of those liberal politicians they could fix these problems… Just a thought…

  49. Damn Infrastructures should start behaving and doing their work like real americans or POTUS Trumpus the Great will throw their lazy ass back to Infrastructuria or whathever hellhole they came from… Lazy fucks.. Want to use the great American achievements like roads, bridges and water and don#t want to do anything about it.. lazy infrastructures…

  50. The Sierra Club warned the state, but they were told that the repairs were not worth the money. We should probably start listening to the Sierra Club.

  51. more and stroung stormes maybe we will see more of this a the earth warms.
