Temporary Fix For Oroville Dam Spillway Could Involve Making Water Jump Gap

I WOULDN’T RULE IT OUT. GOOD BET MY FRIEND. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. APPRECIATE THAT. TONIGHT ENGINEERS SAY IT MAY BE IMPOSSIBLE TO COMPLETELY REPAIR THE SPILLWAY AT THE OROVILLE DAM BEFORE THE RAINY SEASON STARTS IN THE FALL. EXPERTS HAVE RELEASEDDED A NEW REPORT ON THE SAFETY OF THE OROVILLE SPILLWAY. IF THE SPILLWAY IS NOT REPAIRED BY NEXT NOVEMBER CALIFORNIA — CALIFORNIANS COULD BE AT SEVERE RISK SAYS A NEW REPORT RELEASED. DREW BOLLEA HAS THE LATEST ON THE REPORT. Reporter: THEY DON’T GO INTO DETAIL ON WHAT EXACTLY THAT RISK IS BUT IN THIS NEW REPORT THEY DO OUTLINE A TWO PHASE SOLUTION. I THINK IT’S ONE OF THE WORSE INFRASTRUCTURE THINGS YOU CAN IMAGINE. Reporter: A PANEL OF ENGINEERS POINT TO THE PROBLEMS. THERE IS POTENTIAL FOR ADDITIONAL THINGS TO GO WRONG ON THE REMAINING PORTION OF THAT SPILLWAY. Reporter: JAY LUND IS A CIVIL ENGINEERING PROFESSOR. HE READ OVER THE REPORT THAT OUTLINES THE PROBLEMS. NOW THEY’RE PROPOSING SOME UNIQUE SOLUTIONS. ONE TEMPORARY RECK PHREPB TKAEUGS IS BUILDING AN ANGLED FLIP ABOVE THE COLLAPSED — TEMPORARY RECOMMENDATION IS BUILDING AN ANGLED FLIP. I THINK IT MAKES A LOT OF SENSE. Reporter: LUND SAYS IT’S A TYPICAL STRATEGY AT OTHER DAMS BUT THIS MIGHT BE A WAY TO JUMP THE HOLE. THEY’RE NOT HOLDING BACK. Reporter: THEY STATE WE’RE IN THE PROCESS OF ANALYZING ALTERNATIVE APPROACHES. WITH A COMPLETE REBUILD IN THE FUTURE. IT’S JUST A MATTER OF HOW MUCH TIME IT TAKES AND WHAT EXPENSE YOU WANT TO UNDERGO. THE DEPARTMENT OF WATER RESOURCES SAYS THEIR GOAL IS TO HAVE A FULLY FUNCTIONING SPILLWAY BY NOVEMBER. AND THAT MIGHT BE A LOFTY GOAL CONSIDERING THE FINDINGS BY THESE EXPERTS. AND A BIT OF A DISCONNECT WITH THIS TWO PHASE SOLUTION THAT THEY’RE LOOKING AT.

  1. What about the rains that are heading to california right now? What about the snow about to thaw from the sierras? Will they wait until november?

  2. At this point I think elected officials need to figure out how to evacuate people by buses and get them to safe places. Cause what officials do not want is mass fatalities due to drownings throughout California. Calling earth to elected officials. Don't leave anybody behind officials. Now its not rocket science to realize the situation in California is turning out to be a total nightmare with floods people haven't seen in may by 10O years. Public safety has to be a number one priority. Its all about lives here. So its called prevention. Its better to give early evacuation orders than last minute evacuation orders. People just know even if you are not in a flood zone or potential flood zone you can still get flooded.

  3. Elected officials please get shelters set up in and out of California. and get some buses to bus people. I'm not kidding. To many people can drown from all these rains. You don't want a new Orleans state wide throughout California. Act early not late. Actually people don't wait for anybody to say evacuate you need to try to save your selves and I'm not just saying this. You know people can't be left in the dark to fend for themselves. Officials need to be outspoken.

  4. CA treats it's dams like it treats it's roads. Democrats could have fixed it in 2005, TYPICAL!

  5. That's a huge hole to jump!

Well, how does a fix in November prevent flooding from the Sierras melting?

  6. If I had been governor in april of 2011 I would have begun sinking rebar pillars into the bedrock at the main stress point of the spillway…..just about the mid-point. This would have been at the start of the drought. A very comfortable span of time to do the work before trouble.

  7. Build a bridge over the hole with steel spillway – make in sections and drop in place.  Or fill the hole with politicians and water engineers who failed to fix the problem years ago.

  8. just build a new spillway from the parking lot area!!! add a simple set of spill gates and a whole new spillway from the parking lot to the turtle pond!!

  9. we approved a 7 BILLION dollar bond for the state to fix EXACTLY these sort of problems and moonbeam does not even have Orville on his "infrastructure wishlist". WTF is going on in this state? and why the hell is the media not badgering brown every GDday over it ..too busy making up fake news about the president evidently.

  10. this will be good! Time to call Red Bull and Nitro Circus to build a ramp. Jump to the River in the future on a bike of course.

  11. @cbs sacramento, you should be Embarrased by your reporting of this subject.
citizen journalists do a better job, and they do not get paid.
blancolirio. he is the one who you should talk to about this subject.
And give him some gas so he can fly more and take more footage of the sierras.
And educate people about water, and its effect on life, even in citys.

  12. TO BUILD THAT WATER JUMP, THEY WILL HAVE TO CUT IT OFF BEHIND THOSE HOLES THEY DRILLED IN THE SPILLWAY.

  13. Dear Readers,
First, I concur with "Nanette Lemus"'s suggestions. I am a Katrina survivor.
Second, from the ALREADY BUILT 'oh, it will do' with a thickness of ONE FOOT spillway, some genius comes up with the idea of a ramp that is supposed to withstand 50,000 cubic feet of water per second pressure??????
Water runs to the chasm it created, right? (The path of least resistance.) Why not just CHANNEL the water to that chasm, and support the BOTTOM of the chasm, so the water flows away from the power plant? If it is possible, use "the teeth" at the bottom of the broken spillway, at the bottom of the chasm?

  14. It's a solution that won't work for a variety of reasons. It also is not a building block towards a permanent replacement. Nice demonstration of a seriously flawed idea. It will obstruct a permanent solution, and neither the upper or lower remaining sections will withstand the load a ramp would present. Both would be destroyed in short order.

  15. Use the money on infrastructure. Not on illegal immigrants. Governor Brown..

  16. Are you KIDDING me??? To jump the Gap the water would have to be moving 100+ mph!!! Where's Eval Kineval when you need him?

  17. WTF ??? Water jumping that gap is total fake news. Trying to do that would beat the lower ramp into pieces pdq.

  18. For one thing , they need to blast a canal to the downriver side so the water no longer runs upriver impeding outflow of the power plant. If it was turned to the downriver side it will increase outflow from the power plant just like a vennturi dredge nozzle or carburator venturi, basically causing negative pressure/increased outflow for the powerplant. As for the gap, get the ramp or some steel plate/bridging in there before its too fn late..
