WHAT HE MAY WAS ABLE TO DO THREE MONTHS AGO TO WHAT HE CAN’T DO NOW. IT HITS ME ON THAT ONE. I WOULD LOOK FORWARD AND GO, LET’S WORK A DIFFERENT CORNER, A DIFFERENT PATH. AND WE CAN GET THROUGH IT.>>Reporter: WHAT FRUSTRATES HIM?>>STARING AT HIS LEGS AND TRYING TO MAKE THEM MOVE. BUT THEY CAN’T MOVE. OR WHAT REALLY FRUSTRATES HIM IS NOT BEING ABLE TO MOVE HIS CORE. ONE THING TO ME ILLUSTRATES IT AS STRONGLY AS ANYTHING ELSE AND THAT’S — HE WAS MARRIED TO MIA FARROW ABOUT 1 1/2 YEARS. SHE WENT TO LONDON AND SO DID I. SHE WAS ON “ROSEMARY’S BABY.” I WAS GOING TO COULD “ITALIAN JOB” FOR MICHAEL CAIN, THE SCORE. MY SON WAS BORN THERE. MIA NOTIFIED FRANK THAT I HAD A SON BORN THERE IN ’68, ’69. AND SAYING, KNOWING IT WILL BE A FAR BETTER WORLD THAN WE MESSED UP. HE’S GOT THAT ON HIS WALL NOW. THAT’S A REAL FRIEND. FRANK WAS THE MOST DEVOTED, LOVING FRIEND YOU COULD ASK FOR. HE HAD NO GRAY. HE WOULD ROLL OVER YOU IN A MACK TRUCK IN REVERSE. [LAUGHTER] HE WAS A REAL FRIEND, MAN. REAL FRIEND. ALWAYS.>>Ian: LET’S TALK ABOUT MICHAEL JACKSON. (*) ALL OF US HAVE “THRILLER.”>>IT’S AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE. MICHAEL IS A VERY, VERY SPECIAL TALENT, REALLY SPECIAL, IN ANY WAY. IN OBSERVATION, INFLUENCES, DANCING, SINGING, EVERYTHING. DIDN’T MISS A THING. HE KNEW EVERYBODY’S LINES, SONGS, DANCE STEPS, EVERYTHING.>>Ian: SO “THRILLER” HAD SEVEN TOP 10 SINGLES. IT DOMINATED THE CHARTS IN A WAY NO ALBUM EVER HAD BEFORE.>>110 MILLION ALBUMS.>>Ian: WHEN YOU WERE IN THE STUDIO DOING IT, WERE THERE ANY MOMENTS THAT YOU THOUGHT — DID YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT IMPACT THAT ALBUM WOULD HAVE?>>I DON’T THINK OF IT LIKE THAT. I THINK ABOUT WHAT TOUCHES ME. I’VE NEVER IN MY LIFE EVER DONE MUSIC FOR MONEY OR FAME. NEVER. AND NEVER WILL. GOD WALKS OUT OF THE ROOM THEN. IT’S NOT SACRED ANYMORE. AND IT IS SACRED, YOU KNOW, BECAUSE TO ME, MELODY IS GOD’S VOICE. IT’S CLOTHED BY LYRICS, BUT THE MELODY IS GOD’S VOICE. THAT’S THE POWER.>>Ian: WHEN YOU DID THE PLAYBACK FOR “BILLIE JEAN,” WAS THERE A MOMENT WHERE YOU SAID, WE’VE DONE SOMETHING SPECIAL HERE?>>NO. THAT WAS THE PLAN IN THE BEGINNING, MAN. YOU GO THROUGH 800 SONGS TO GET NINE. THAT’S NOT CASUAL. THAT’S WHAT YOU ARE AIMING FOR. MY LEAST FAVOURITES ARE 2, 6, AND 11. YOU WANT IT TALK ABOUT A TOP 6 RECORD? IF YOU ARE 2, YOU WANT TO BE 1. RIGHT?>>Ian: SO WE KNOW A LOT ABOUT MICHAEL JACKSON AND YOU WERE JUST TALKING ABOUT HIM. WHAT ON THOSE ALBUMS, “THRILLER,” FOR EXAMPLE, IS YOU? WE HAVE HIS MUSIC, SOME OF HIS WRITING.>>WE TAKE HIS STUFF AND TAKE IT TO ANOTHER LEVEL. “DON’T STOP UNTIL YOU GET ENOUGH,” VERY WELL KNOWN THAT MICHAEL SENT ME A NOTE, COULD YOU TAKE OFF THE VIOLINS IN THE INTRODUCTION? IT’S MESSING UP MY GROOVE. DO YOU KNOW WHAT THAT LINE WAS? (*) THE IDENTIFYING LINE ON THE GODDAMN SONG.>>Ian: HE SAID TAKE IT OFF?>>YEAH.>>Ian: AND YOU SAID?>>NO WAY. DON’T TELL ME WHAT TO DO.>>Ian: WHO WAS RIGHT?>>WHAT ENDED UP ON THE RECORD? (*) THAT’S ONE OF THE STRONGEST PARTS IN THE INTRODUCTION. (*) BEN WRIGHT WROTE THAT, MOTOWN ARRANGER. * DON’T STOP UNTIL YOU GET ENOUGH *>>Ian: LET’S TALK ABOUT “WE ARE THE WORLD.” ONE OF THE BEST-SELLING RECORDS OF ALL TIME. THERE’S BEEN A LOT OF OTHER GROUPS THAT HAVE DONE SIMILAR SONGS, INCLUDING HERE IN CANADA. FIRST OF ALL, THAT LINE, “PARK YOUR EGO AT THE DOOR,” WHO COME UP WITH THAT?>>I DID, BUT IT WASN’T NECESSARY. THEY CAME IN FOR THE RIGHT REASONS. THEY REALLY DID. THEY CAME THERE TO GIVE BACK. AND THAT’S — IT WASN’T NECESSARY. * WE’RE A PART OF GOD’S GREAT BIG FAMILY * * YOU KNOW LOVE IS ALL WE NEED * WE ARE THE WORLD * WE ARE THE CHILDREN >>Ian: WAS THERE A LOT OF POLITICS TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHO WOULD DO WHICH VOCALS?>>YES. AND PLACEMENT, ALL SIGNED OF — KIND OF STUFF. I HAD TO TAKE CARE OF TELLING 46 PEOPLE ONLY 21 COULD SING SOLOS. THAT WAS NOT POPULAR AT ALL. I MEAN, THEY WERE FREAKING OUT, MAN.>>Ian: WHO DID YOU HAVE TO SAY NO TO?>>I DON’T WANT TO GET INTO THAT. [LAUGHTER] BUT YOU CAN IMAGINE. * WE ARE THE WORLD * WE ARE THE CHILDREN >>DIANA ROSS AND HER LIMOSINE, HER BODYGUARDS, AND SPRINGSTEEN COMES IN A PICKUP TRUCK. * WE ARE THE WORLD THEY CAME FOR THE RIGHT REASONS. THEY SAW EACH OTHER AND THEY GOT IT. THEY REALLY DID.>>Ian: OUR TIME’S UP. ONE LAST THING — WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU?>>10 MOVIES, 6 ALBUMS, 4 BROADWAY SHOWS, 2 NETWORKS, IN BUSINESS WITH DONATELLA VERSACE JAZZ LOUNGE AND JUKE JOINT IN 25 HOTELS, $700 MILLION HOTELS AROUND THE WORLD. I HAVE A HUGE COMPANY IN DUBAI. IT’S UNBELIEVABLE. I HAVE A HUGE COMPANY.>>Ian: SO YOU ARE RETIRING?>>NO. I’VE NEVER BEEN SO BUSY IN MY LIFE. I’M 85.>>Ian: YOU ARE AN IMPRESSIVE MAN. NICE MEETING YOU.>>YOU, TOO, BROTHER. YOU’RE LIKE A MOVIE STAR, MAN. GOOD GOD. HAVE YOU DONE MOVIES?>>Ian: NO.>>YOU SHOULD, MAN.>>Ian: THAT’S FANTASTIC. I APPRECIATE IT. I’VE BEEN A HUGE FAN OF A LOT OF YOUR WORK. THAT’S VERY COOL. ON TO YOUR NEXT INTERVIEW.>>THANK YOU. THANK YOU.>>Ian: THANK YOU.>>BEAUTIFUL>>Ian: OVER THE HOLIDAYS, WE’RE TAKING ANOTHER LOOK AT SOME OF THE POWERFUL IMAGES OF THE YEAR, TAKING YOU BEHIND THE LENS TO HEAR FROM THE PEOPLE WHO CAPTURED THEM. TONIGHT VIDEOGRAPHER JARED THOMAS TALKS ABOUT SUSAN ORMISTON’S STORY ON CLIMATE CHANGE, SHOT IN CANADA’S FAR NORTH.>>I’D BE LYING IF I DIDN’T SAY THAT THERE’S A FEW TIMES I WOULD LET MY CAMERA ROLL AND I WOULD TAKE A DEEP BREATH AND TAKE IT ALL IN. (*) TAKE ONE. SO I GOT THE AMAZING OPPORTUNITY TO GO TO YUKON THIS YEAR AND SHOOT UP ON THE GLACIERS WITH SUSAN ORMISTON. A LOT OF TIMES YOU ARE LOOKING FOR THAT CLOSE-UP, THAT DETAIL TO REALLY BRING A VIEWER INTO THE STORY YOU’RE TRYING TO TELL. EVERY SHOT I WAS TRYING TO GET, FELT LIKE IT NEEDED TO BE A WIDE SHOT TO TELL THE STORY. WHEN I WENT TO THE YUKON, I WAS TRYING TO THINK ABOUT, HOW CAN I BRING THIS TO THE VIEWER THAT THEY MIGHT NOT HAVE SEEN BEFORE. I BROUGHT A GIMBLE, A STABILIZER THAT CAN MAKE YOUR CAMERA FEEL LIKE IT’S FLOATING. FOR ONE OF THE SCENES THAT WE SHOT, I USED THAT THE WHOLE TIME. YOU CAN MOVE WITH THE SUBJECTS. THEY WERE MEASURING ICE DEPTHS. AND IT GAVE AN IDEA, THESE ARE THE CREVICES THEY HAD TO WALK THROUGH. MAYBE IT’S STEEPER THAN I THOUGHT. I WOULD BE LYING IF I DIDN’T SLIP A FEW TIMES. IT SHOWED IT WAS VERY ICY AND SLIPPERY AS WELL. IT WAS THE BEST WAY TO GIVE PEOPLE PERSPECTIVE. IF I DON’T HAVE THE RIGHT SHOTS FOR SUSAN, SHE IS NOT ABLE TO WRITE THE STORY PROPERLY. WE REALLY NEED TO WORK AS A TEAM, SO ESPECIALLY IN AN IMPORTANT STORY LIKE CLIMATE CHANGE HAPPENING IN CANADA, IF I DON’T HAVE THE PROPER SHOTS, SUSAN WILL NOT BE ABLE TO WRITE THE SCRIPT TO TELL THE STORY PROPERLY.>>Ian: AND HOPEFULLY SAW THAT WITH OUR YouTube CHANNEL. THERE’S A LOT OF MATERIAL ON THERE, INCLUDING SOME MORE OF THOSE “BEHIND THE LENS” FEATURES. THAT IS “THE NATIONAL” FOR THIS CHRISTMAS DAY FROM VANCOUVER. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR WATCHING AND MERRY CHRISTMAS.
