UK flood warning: Evacuations in place after mudslides strike – latest weather updates – News 247

 Police have evacuated 35 homes in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire after a mudslide struck the market town The incident occurred just before 5pm as a result of heavy rainfall in the area. A police spokesman said: “Thirty-five homes have been evacuated in Mansfield following a mudslide  “Police, the fire service and the council were called to Bank End Close just before 5pm today (Thursday 7 November) following concerns for the safety of people living in the houses  “Berry Hill Lane has been closed between Berry Hill Road and Jenny Beckett’s Lane until further notice  “Drivers are being advised to avoid the area.”  READ MORE M1 traffic latest: M1 lanes closed in two areas after flooding  Keeley Stovell, manager of Browns Bar and Bistro in Mansfield, told Nottinghamshire Live the mudslides had “covered people’s back gardens”  He told the publication: “The top of the bank has come down along with trees. “It has covered people’s back gardens It has covered over six-foot fences. “Police and fire have been evacuating people from their houses, it’s a bit unstable especially with the rain forecast for tonight   “I feel sorry for those who have come back from work and have no garden left and families have been moved out of their homes for the night  “I was shocked, it’s not something you expect.” Flood alerts are in force in the area as the River Maun’s levels are high and continuing to rise  The Environmental Agency said river levels are “continuing to rise at the Whitewater Bridge river gauge as a result of heavy rainfall” READ MORE UK snow MAP: Scandinavian deep freeze to bring EIGHT inches of snow  The agency added: “Consequently, the risk of flooding remains  “Areas most at risk are low-lying agricultural land and roads around Mansfield, the Sherwood Forest Caravan Park at Clipstone, Edwinstowe, Ollerton, Whitewater Lane at Whitewater Bridge and West Drayton  “Further rainfall is forecast over the next 12 hours. “River levels may pose a flood risk until Friday, 08/11/19 We are closely monitoring the situation.” Trending  A spokesperson for the council has said to contact their out of hours service if affected by the evacuation  The spokesperson said: “Confirmation of the incident at Berry Hill Quarry from our colleagues at Mansfield Police  “Please note a number of properties have been evacuated and road closures are in place Mansfield District Council has supported with emergency accommodation. “If your house is affected and you need support to find accommodation call our out of hours service on 01623 463050 ”

  1. As a landscape gardener i know that alot of trees together act as a retainer.this is many years of weakened tree roots and increase in subsidence with rain
